We went diving and liked it a lot — two dives, each nearly an hour, we met rays, a moray eel and lots of fish. My son loved it; instructor Slava ran everything at the highest level.
What is this tour like?
Two dives at the Ao Nang archipelago — the islands visible from the beach — with Local Diving, a small Ao Nang centre. ฿2,900 (about $80) for the two dives; ฿3,400 buys a three-dive version, arranged on request.
The boat is a long-tail, the traditional Thai working boat, not a speedboat or a big day boat. Divers writing about the trips describe two long shallow dives with generous bottom time, and name the animals of the Ao Nang sites: seahorses, moray eels, rays, sea snakes, nurse sharks, large shoals and big pufferfish. Visibility at these sites is not the point; the macro life is.
What is included: car and boat transfers from your hotel in the Ao Nang area, lunch, drinking water, basic Thai dive operator insurance, diving equipment and divemaster services. What is not: the national park fee, ฿400 per diver at the Ao Nang islands, and transfers from further afield — Krabi town, Khlong Muang, Tub Kaek and Railay carry a ฿400 supplement.
A companion who does not dive can come on the same boat as a snorkeller for ฿1,500, with the same transfers, lunch, insurance and equipment. Children are welcome but the operator prices them case by case rather than publishing a rate.

Thirteen islands forty-five minutes off Ao Nang beach, three snorkelling stops from the dive boat Ingmarie, back on the beach at 15:00. ฿1,900 (about $53) for an adult and ฿1,500 for a child of 4–12 — the operator publishes both, so the price is per head. No snorkel guide in the water on this particular trip: you must be able to swim on your own.
