Kon-Tiki runs this one to a published calendar rather than daily: ten fixed dates between 11 November and 8 April. Two dives ฿4,000 (about $111), three dives ฿4,800. The King Cruiser is a car ferry that sank in 1997 between Phuket and Phi Phi; the operator calls it an advanced dive because of the depth and the currents.

Just finished a fantastic three day open water course with Kon-Tiki Krabi. Thanks to Dylan for getting us all certified and to Krabi for the most amazing conditions for learning how to dive.

What is this tour like?

A dive day out of Ao Nang to the Shark Point group — the King Cruiser wreck, Anemone Reef and Shark Point itself. Kon-Tiki does not run it daily. The operator publishes ten fixed dates for the season, from 11 November through to 8 April, and charges ฿4,000 (about $111) for two dives or ฿4,800 for three.

The King Cruiser was a car ferry running between Phuket and the Phi Phi Islands when she hit Anemone Reef and sank on 4 May 1997. Nobody was lost. Kon-Tiki describes the wreck as more of an advanced dive because of the depth and the often strong currents over the site, so this is a trip to look at carefully if you have just been certified.

What is included is the same as on Kon-Tiki’s other dive days: pickup from your hotel, soft drinks, electrolyte, snacks, lunch, water, coffee, tea, fresh fruit and a professional guide. The marine park fee is not included — ฿600 for an adult at Phi Phi rates, ฿200 for a child.

One caution about the price. The operator prints the figures in a schedule table without stating a unit. Two dives at ฿4,000 is in line with what other Ao Nang centres charge one diver for a Phi Phi day, but the page does not say so. Ask the operator to put the unit in writing when you book.

What are the highlights?

  • The King Cruiser wreck, one of the best-known wrecks in the Andaman Sea
  • Shark Point and Anemone Reef on the same day
  • Ten published dates between 11 November and 8 April — not a daily departure
  • Choice of two or three dives, priced separately
  • Hotel pickup, lunch and drinks on board are in the trip price

Who it’s for
Certified divers who want a wreck day and can plan around fixed dates. Advanced Open Water is the level normally asked for the King Cruiser itself.
Level
Depth and current at the wreck put it above a first post-certification dive; the operator says so itself.
What to bring
Cash for the marine park fee, your certification card and your logbook — depth-limited sites are checked.

FAQ

Is this trip available every day?
No. Kon-Tiki publishes ten specific dates for the season: 11 and 26 November, 14 December, 12 and 25 January, 9 and 23 February, 11 and 25 March, and 8 April. Everything is subject to change with weather and numbers.
Is the price per diver?
The operator does not say. The schedule table gives ฿4,000 (about $111) for two dives and ฿4,800 for three without a unit. Ask for written confirmation when you book.
What certification do I need for the wreck?
Kon-Tiki calls the King Cruiser more of an advanced dive because of the depth and the frequent currents. Other Krabi centres set an Advanced Open Water requirement for the wreck specifically. Tell the operator your level and logged dives before booking.
What are the other two dive sites?
Anemone Reef, a rock pinnacle covered in anemones, and Shark Point, a limestone ridge system that gives the whole area its name.
How much is the marine park fee?
For this trip Kon-Tiki publishes ฿600 (about $17) for an adult and ฿200 for a child, not included in the price.
Can I take three dives instead of two?
Yes, that is a published option at ฿4,800 (about $135) rather than ฿4,000.
Do I need my own equipment?
The operator does not publish an equipment charge for this trip on the schedule page. Confirm what is provided and what costs extra when you book — nitrox in particular is charged separately at Krabi centres.
Where does the boat leave from?
From Ao Nang, with pickup from your hotel included. Kon-Tiki’s shop is at 335/4-5 Na Thai, Tambon Ao Nang.

฿4,300 (about $119) for two dives at Phi Phi, running daily from 1 November to 31 March. Groups are capped at four divers. A non-diving companion travels on the same boat for ฿2,500— that companion line is what shows the price is charged per head. Bring your own kit and the operator takes ฿300 off.

The operator prints “2 dives : ฿4,300” directly above “Passenger : ฿2,500” for the same trip — a separate price for a second body on the same boat, which only makes sense per person. The national park fee is extra: ฿600 (about $17) on the first day, ฿200 on the second, and only collected if the rangers come aboard.
