I had an absolutely pleasurable experience with the team at Real Divers. If you are looking for more than just a standard dive trip, this is the place to go. The equipment was top-notch, the boat was great, and the overall atmosphere was like being among friends.
What is this tour like?
Real Divers has been running dive trips out of Jomtien since 2006, and the thing that makes their day different is the boat. Instead of a chartered dive boat that takes an hour or two to reach a site, they use their own 12-metre twin-engine speedboat: twelve minutes to the near islands, twenty-five to the far ones. Less time getting there means more time underwater.
You meet at the dive centre at 08:45 and the boat leaves Jomtien Beach at 09:15, fifty metres away — no walk through the crowds at Bali Hai pier. The day covers two dives, with a third available. The coral sites are around Koh Larn, Koh Sak and Koh Krok, where angelfish, butterflyfish, pufferfish, rays and large hawksbill turtles are regular. Advanced divers head for the wrecks: HTMS Kood, HTMS Mataphon and HTMS Khram, three ex-US-Navy vessels scuttled between 22 and 30 metres, with schooling barracuda, batfish, sweetlips and small bamboo sharks.
The boat is kept to a maximum of ten divers, four per dive leader. Lunch, snacks and cold drinks come with the trip, along with tanks, weights and rental gear if you need it. You are usually back at the beach around two in the afternoon.
What are the highlights?
- A 12-metre twin-engine speedboat, not a slow charter boat
- 12 minutes to the near islands, 25 minutes to the far ones
- Boarding straight off Jomtien Beach, 50 metres from the dive centre
- Coral reefs off Koh Larn, Koh Sak and Koh Krok
- Ex-US-Navy wrecks HTMS Kood, HTMS Mataphon and HTMS Khram for advanced divers
- Never more than ten divers on the boat, four per dive leader
