What is this tour like?
TopCats is a specimen fishing lake and resort at Taling Ngam in the south-west of Koh Samui, and the full day is its main product: twelve hours from 08:00 to 20:00, ฿7,000, and the price page states plainly that prices are per person fishing. The lake holds giant Siamese carp, Mekong catfish, Amazon redtail catfish and arapaima, grown large on a year-round tropical climate and a high-protein diet.
There are ten fishing salas around the water, each with cushioned seating, power, lighting, cool boxes and clean towels, 5G wifi all round the lake, room for a fan or umbrella, and waitress service so you do not have to leave the rods to eat. Some pegs are doubles for fishing with a friend.
Each angler gets two set-ups with one predator rod allowed at a time — Century rods, Shimano Bait Runner reels, Gamma line, Pallatrax end tackle and Delkim alarms — plus a full daily bait pack: a kilo of 20 mm boilies, Pallatrax Jungle Pop Ups, three kilos of Mufford/feeder mix, maize, three loaves and a kilo of dead bait.
Guides who have been at the lake for years advise on baits and techniques, net and unhook the fish, treat the hook holds with antiseptic and let the fish recover over oxygen before you get in the water for the photograph.
The house rules are for the fish as much as for you: the guide sets the drag, bait runners stay engaged while the rod is in the pod, rod sharing is not permitted, and fish are not weighed — the guides estimate. On the full-day package the resort runs a "no catch no cash" policy.
Shorter tickets are sold too: a predator session from 14:00 to 20:00 at ฿4,500, an early bird session from 08:00 to 14:00 at ฿3,800, four hours by arrangement at ฿3,300 and a five-hour arapaima session at ฿10,500.
