Dubai for groups: when the whole boat beats a seat

Prices for a day on the water in Dubai are written in four different units and in two currencies. AED 210 (about $57) is per person. €390 is per boat. AED 550 (about $150) is per session. AED 680 (about $185) is per jet ski. Until you know which of the four you are reading, you cannot say what your group will pay — and the answer flips as the group grows.

A per-person price grows with every guest who joins. A per-boat price does not move at all. A per-session price covers whoever climbs aboard, up to the limit. A per-jet-ski price covers one rider or two on the same machine. So for every pair of options in the same currency there is a headcount at which the whole boat becomes the cheaper answer. How the total grows

The total, and it moves at a different speed for each unit. Two on the dinner cruise pay AED 420 (about $114) and twenty pay AED 4,200 (about $1,143). Two on the fishing charter pay €145 and eight pay €145. Two on the wake boat pay AED 550 (about $150) and five pay the same AED 550 (about $150). Two on one jet ski pay AED 680 (about $185), and four on two skis pay AED 1,360 (about $370). Same water, four completely different curves.

Capacity, the other half of the answer

Capacity is the other half of the answer. A per-boat price stays cheap only while everybody fits: the Marina yacht takes up to 10 guests, the Ocean Active fishing boat up to 8, the Blue Wake boat up to 5, the kite lesson up to 4. Higher caps exist: the 52ft yacht at Dubai Harbour takes up to 15, the Blue Fish fishing charter up to 10, and the Big Wake boat up to 8. Past the limit you are buying two of something, and the sums start again from the top.

Two or three: the whole boat wins sooner than you think

For the Dubai Deep-Sea & Sport Fishing Charter the crossover is two. Ocean Active charges €145 for the boat, 240 minutes, up to 8 anglers. Two places on the Dubai Scuba Diving day come to €220 at Al Boom Diving's €110 per person — a pair already pays more for two seats than for a whole fishing boat.

Divided by the boat's own limit of eight anglers, that €145 works out at roughly €18 each, for four hours out in the Arabian Gulf. The dinner cruise sits on the other side of a currency line: its seats are quoted in dirhams, AED 210 (about $57) a head and AED 1,260 (about $343) for six, so no headcount turns one price into the other. The thin spot with Ocean Active is the record — 4 from 9 reviews.

Four or five: one session for everyone, one machine for two on the ski

The Dubai Wakeboard & Wakesurf Session is AED 550 (about $150) per session with Blue Wake Dubai, 60 minutes, up to 5 people. The unit means a lone rider and a group of five pay the same AED 550 (about $150) — split across five friends, that is AED 110 (about $30) apiece. One place on the kite lesson costs AED 900 (about $245), more than the whole wake boat.

The jet ski is priced by the machine. AED 680 (about $185) covers one machine on the Dubai Jet Ski Skyline Tour, and a second rider on the same machine adds nothing: two together still pay AED 680 (about $185), which is AED 340 (about $92) a head.

Four riders take two skis, AED 1,360 (about $370); the tour runs up to 8 riders in all. The Dubai Kitesurf & Wing-Foil Lessons at AED 900 (about $245) per person cap at 4 students, so eight of you book two lessons and still pay AED 7,200 (about $1,959).

Is a private yacht worth it for six to ten?

Yes, once the group passes six. The Dubai Marina Luxury Yacht Charter is €390 per boat for 120 minutes, up to 10 guests, with Xclusive Yachts — 4.9 from 14,349 reviews, the most reviewed boat operator in the Marina. The figure does not budge whether two of you board or ten.

Divided by the boat's own limit of ten guests, €390 is €39 a head; with four aboard the same charter is €97.50 each. Six catamaran seats at €65 come to exactly €390. Against the dinner cruise there is no crossover to name: those seats are quoted in dirhams, at AED 210 (about $57) each, and the yacht in euros, so the two prices never meet on one line.

Where does a party of twenty go?

Onto the two big decks. The Dubai Marina Sightseeing & Dinner Cruise takes up to 40 guests at AED 210 (about $57) per person with Xclusive Cruises; the Dubai Sailing Catamaran Sunset Cruise takes up to 30 at €65 per person with El Mundo Dubai.

Twenty guests come to AED 4,200 (about $1,143) on the cruise and to €1,300 on the catamaran. There is a third deck of the same order: the 90-minute Love Boats UAE sightseeing run seats up to 22 at AED 149 (about $41) per person — twenty guests come to AED 2,980 (about $811), though with no dinner and in half the time.

Between ten and thirty the split gets interesting. Twelve people are two yacht charters at €780, or twelve catamaran seats at exactly €780 — the same total for one shared 150-minute sail or two private 120-minute charters. Above the yacht's limit of 10 guests a per-boat price stops being a single payment, and the whole comparison restarts.
