On Mallorca the coast decides the holiday more than the town does. The south-west around Palma and Puerto Portals is marina country: short runs, big boats, beach clubs. The north around Alcúdia and Port de Pollença is shallower, calmer and closer to the cliffs of Cap de Formentor. The north-east, out of Cala Ratjada, lives off calas that only boats reach.

Three stretches of coast. Below is what leaves from which harbour, so you can put your base where your day starts.
South-west coast: Palma, Puerto Portals and the Bay of Palma
The south-west is the harbour half of the island. Jet-ski tours, day boats and the big catamaran all leave from the Palma marina and from Puerto Portals in Calvià. The routes run to the caves of Portals Vells, the islet of El Toro and the calas of the Bay of Palma.

Chilli Jetski Mallorca rides out of the Puerto Portals marina in Calvià: 60 minutes for €90 per jet ski, up to two riders, licence-free, with an instructor leading the route. You pass cliffs and calas towards the Bay of Palma and stop to swim in a turquoise cove.
Boat hire from Palma

North coast: Port d'Alcúdia and Port de Pollença
The north is the coast where people learn. The bays of Alcúdia and Pollença are sheltered, shallow and steady in the wind, which is why the sailing school, the dive centre and the kite school all sit here — along with a second jet-ski base and the fishing charter.
Jet ski from Alcúdia to Cap de Formentor
GOJET Alcudia starts in Port d'Alcúdia: 90 minutes for €85 per jet ski, up to two riders, licence-free and guided. The route runs along sheer cliffs and sea caves all the way to Cap de Formentor, with a swim stop in clear water.
Sailing in the Bay of Pollença
Sail&Surf Pollença stands right on the beach at Port de Pollença: €59 per person for a 2-hour session, up to four people. Courses start from zero experience on a Hobie catamaran or a dinghy; renting without an instructor takes proven sailing ability.
Diving in Port de Pollença
Scuba Mallorca is a PADI 5-star centre in Port de Pollença: try-dives from €75 per person over three hours, in groups of up to eight. You dive caves, reefs and protected Posidonia meadows; gear, tanks and weights are in the price, certification-card fees and transfers are not.
Kitesurfing in the Bay of Alcúdia
Cuatro Vientos Mallorca teaches kitesurf and wing-foil on Alcúdia Bay: €90 per 2-hour session, up to four people, gear and coach included. Thermal winds and shallow, warm water make the bay a learners' spot; the IKO card, photos and transfers come on top.
Fishing from Port d'Alcúdia
Fishing Mallorca sails from Port d'Alcúdia with captain Vince Riera: €140 per person for five hours, up to six anglers aboard. Rods, reels, bait and the licence for the trip are included; food, drinks, gratuities and transfers are not.
Wakepark near Alcúdia
The Mallorca Wakepark lies near Alcúdia, on a lagoon rather than the sea: €25 per person for a one-hour session, up to eight riders. An overhead cable tows you across the water, and the board, helmet, impact vest and intro coaching are included — no boat needed.
North-east: Cala Ratjada and the calas only boats reach
La Cala Boat Tours leaves from Cala Ratjada on the north-east coast: €49 per person for three hours in a small-group speedboat with up to twelve guests. A skipper and a guide run in to coves with no road to them; snorkel gear and water are aboard, food, drinks and transfers are not.
Which coast suits whom?
In short
the south-west if you are staying in Palma, have little time and want a big catamaran or your own boat. The north if you want to learn something — sailing, diving, kitesurfing — or need shallow water with children. The north-east if the calas are the whole point.
Important
