We were complete beginners but Tom was knowledgeable, friendly and committed to making sure we had the best possible fishing experience. We caught numerous bream, serranos and one large scorpionfish. Tom seemed to be disappointed with our haul but we were delighted.
What is this tour like?
A private charter from Port d'Alcúdia on Mallorca's north coast: a 3-hour family trip with children from €690, the classic 4-hour bottom-fishing or trolling trip at €830, a 5-hour amberjack trip at €1,150 (15 August to 15 October) or 7 hours of winter fishing at €1,350 — each for the boat with up to six people. Big-game trolling runs 7 hours for €1,750 or 9 hours for €2,150. The boat is a 9-metre White Shark with Yamaha outboards totalling 450 hp, a WC and a freshwater shower, rigged with custom rods for both bottom fishing and trolling. Licences, fuel, gear, fresh bait and cold drinks are in the price.
For most of the season you anchor over rocky bottoms 50 to 70 metres deep and drop multi-hook rigs baited with prawn and squid for red scorpionfish, black seabream, pandora, moray and conger. In late August, September and early October the boat switches to coastal trolling at 3–5 knots for dorado, barracuda, bonito and amberjack. Many groups keep the last hour for a swim or snorkel in a cove, and you take home the legal catch on ice.
