What is this tour like?
JoyRide Watersports rents self-drive motorboats at Hondoq Bay in Qala, Gozo. You are the captain: explore the coastline of Comino and Gozo at your own pace and stop to swim and snorkel where you like. Before you set off, the team gives you a full briefing and a detailed map showing where to go and the best places to anchor. Caves and rocky areas are off-limits, and in the bays you keep your speed down.
There are seven boats, from a 13 ft / 40 hp boat at €100 for a 3-hour half day to a 20 ft / 200 hp boat at €400 for a 6-hour full day. Extra hours cost €40–€50. Fuel is extra: the boat is refuelled at the end and you pay for what you used — the operator estimates €15–€25 for 3 hours on the 40 hp and 50 hp boats. A €200 cash deposit is refunded at the end if the boat comes back undamaged and on time.
No licence is needed on the boats up to 90 hp, but you do need some boating experience — they are not suitable for beginners. The 115 hp and 200 hp boats require a nautical licence. Drivers must be 21 or older; at 18–21 the operator may accept a booking depending on your experience. Arrive 30 minutes early for the briefing. Alcohol and smoking are not allowed on board.
