What is this tour like?

Klong Rud — also written Klong Root — is not sea kayaking at all: it is a freshwater canal in Nong Thale, fifteen minutes from Ao Nang, where the water is clear enough that the surface reads as a mirror and the fish are visible under the hull. The route runs from the pier across the lake towards Klong Namsai.

The day is short and cheap by Krabi standards. After the paddle the group swims in the lagoon, then returns to the pier for a natural fish spa and fish feeding; cold water and fresh fruit are served there. There is a maximum of three people per kayak.

There are three departures — pick-ups at 08:30, 13:00 and 15:30, with drop-offs at 12:00, 16:30 and 19:00. The price is ฿695 (about $19) per adult aged 10 and over and ฿595 per child aged 3 to 9, with infants free. Two things are paid separately: the Klong Rud entrance fee (฿50 per adult, ฿20 per child, on arrival) and, from Krabi Town, Klong Muang or Tub Kaek, a ฿100 per person transfer surcharge. Meals are not included and there is no lunch stop; there are stands and small restaurants at Klong Rud.

FAQ

What does it cost?
฿695 (about $19) per adult aged 10 and over and ฿595 per child aged 3 to 9, both stated per person; infants aged 1 to 2 are free. The Klong Rud entrance fee is separate: ฿50 per adult and ฿20 per child, paid on arrival.
Is this sea kayaking?
No. Klong Rud is a freshwater canal and lake in Nong Thale, not the sea. That is why the water is so clear and why the trip suits nervous paddlers and small children.
How long does it take?
Three to four hours door to door, with pick-ups at 08:30, 13:00 or 15:30 and drop-offs at 12:00, 16:30 or 19:00.
Are meals included?
No. Water and fresh fruit are in the price, but there is no lunch or dinner. The operator notes there are several stands and restaurants at Klong Rud for a snack or a drink.
How many people fit in a kayak?
A maximum of three per kayak, which is why this trip works for a parent with two small children.
Can we swim?
Yes. After the paddle the group swims in the lagoon, and there is a natural fish spa back at the pier. Bring a swimming costume and a towel.
Do I need cash on the day?
Yes, for the Klong Rud entrance fee — ฿50 (about $1) per adult and ฿20 per child — which is collected on arrival and is not part of the tour price.
Is the afternoon slot worth it?
The 15:30 pick-up returns at 19:00, so it runs into the evening and is the coolest of the three. The operator does not describe it as a plankton or night trip, and we do not present it as one.
