With children on Phuket the decision is made by two numbers rather than by price: the minimum age on board and the length of the crossing. Operators write the age straight into their conditions — anywhere from one year to ten depending on the activity — and the crossing you work out yourself on the map.

The spread is wide. On the Racha beach day infants from one to four travel free; a jet ski takes a passenger from five; a try dive starts at ten. Almost the whole family choice on Phuket sits between those thresholds.

In short

below is a table of ages and child rates from actual price lists, three formats of the day that genuinely work with children, and what to add up if there are four of you.

From what age are children taken on the water?

There are three thresholds. One year — the speedboat beach day, where small children are simply carried. Four to five — nearly every sightseeing and kayaking day. Ten — a first dive on scuba.

Important

an operator's age limit is a boarding condition rather than advice. The speedboat to Phi Phi does not take children under four at all, nor guests over seventy-five, nor pregnant women.

The gentlest day at sea

Coral Island and Racha Yai by speedboat is from ฿2,500 ≈ $69 per adult, ฿2,100 ≈ $58 per child aged 4–11, with infants from one to four free. The crossing to Racha Yai takes forty-five minutes against an hour-plus to Phi Phi, and the afternoon is spent on Kahung Beach with a buffet lunch at the operator's own restaurant.

Shorter still is the longtail half day to the Kai Islands at ฿9,900 ≈ $274 per boat: short crossings, water that is waist-deep in places, a sand-shovel kit in the inclusions and children under three free. The hull covers four guests in the base price and eight at most.

Kayaks: the guide paddles, not the child

This is the detail that makes kayaks work better with children than you would expect. The full day in Phang Nga Bay uses three-seat inflatable canoes: the guide sits at the back and does the work, two guests sit in front. The child rate is exactly half the adult one — ฿1,975 ≈ $55 against ฿3,950 ≈ $109 — with the park fee and a transfer from anywhere on Phuket already inside.

Tip

if a ten-hour day sounds long, take THINN's mangrove kayaks — two and a half hours at ฿1,000 ≈ $28 per adult and ฿750 ≈ $21 per child aged 4–12. The operator sets departures by the tide rather than by the clock, and there is no transfer: guests make their own way to Tha Maphrao in Thalang.

Jet skis and diving: two hard thresholds

A child rides a jet ski as a passenger with an adult from age five and never takes the throttle. The 6 Islands tour is ฿6,500 ≈ $180 per jet ski for two, four hours; the two-hour ride is ฿4,800 ≈ $133 per jet ski for one or two, with a third rider adding ฿500 ≈ $14.

Diving starts later. The try dive with Sea Bees takes guests from ten: from ฿5,900 ≈ $163 per person for two dives in the sea with an instructor alongside, equipment, transfers and food included. No certificate is needed, but the age cannot be worked around.

What will not work with small children

  • The Phi Phi speedboat under four. The operator does not board children under four — that is a condition, not a preference.
  • The Similans outside 15 October – 15 May. The park is closed and no arrangement changes that.
  • Any long crossing from June to September. A metre-plus swell stands 21 to 27 days a month; with children that matters more than the rain.
  • Evening departures. On John Gray's kayaks the child categories of 7–12 and under 6 are priced separately and not published, so we ask the operator for the figure.
  • Night fishing. Six hours from 18:00 to midnight is not a format built around a child's day.

What a day costs for two adults and two children

DayAdultsChildrenAll-in total
Mangrove kayaks, 2.5 hours2 × ฿1,000 ≈ $282 × ฿750 ≈ $21฿3,500 ≈ $97
Racha and Coral Island2 × ฿2,500 ≈ $692 × ฿2,100 ≈ $58฿9,200 ≈ $255
Phang Nga kayaks, full day2 × ฿3,950 ≈ $1092 × ฿1,975 ≈ $55฿11,850 ≈ $328
Phi Phi by speedboat2 × ฿3,900 ≈ $1082 × ฿2,400 ≈ $66฿13,800 ≈ $382 with the park fee

In short

the cheapest and the dearest family day are almost four times apart, and the difference is not about the quality of the boat. It is about the length of the day and whether the park fee is inside.

How do you match the day to your children's ages?

Send the children's ages and your dates on WhatsApp or Telegram — we will tell you where that age is accepted, where there is a child rate and where the child travels free, and confirm it with the operator before you pay.
