What is this tour like?
Saona Island Stars take a couple out on their own boat, away from the big groups, with a private buffet on the quiet beach at Mano Juan. $700 for two adults, $60 for each extra person.
The operator is direct about the plan: on the private trip they deliberately go against the flow of the large tourist crowds. After about half an hour of running time the first beaches of Saona appear, and the morning is spent where the day boats are not.
Lunch is a private buffet with Dominican dishes — pasta, rice, beans, vegetables, salad, fish, meat and plantain — on the beach at Mano Juan. In the afternoon the boat explores the stretches that were busy in the morning and have since emptied, with a short stop to feed the fish if the sea allows. The boat is a 200 or 400 horsepower launch.
The price is read carefully: the operator lists it under a heading that says prices per person, but the $700 figure covers two adults, with $60 for each additional guest — so it is a boat price. Staying in Bayahibe takes $100 off and brings the pair to $600; from a Punta Cana hotel the discount is $50. Bookings can be cancelled free of charge until 12:00 on the day before.
