We hired a speedboat for visiting the Hong Islands around Krabi. We got a fantastic day that we'll not forget. Everything was so smooth and relaxed — the islands are wonderful and our guide was great.
What is this tour like?
A longtail is the working boat of the Andaman coast: a long wooden hull with a car engine on a swinging shaft, shallow enough to nose straight onto a beach. Chartered whole, it is also the cheapest private boat in Krabi — ฿4,500 (about $125) for the 4 Islands run, for a group of two to seven.
The day starts at 08:00, which matters more here than the itinerary: the 4 Islands beaches are calm and near-empty in the first hours and busy by mid-morning. Four to six hours later you are back. The Hong Islands version of the same charter is ฿5,500.
What you get for the money is the boat, a local guide, snorkel masks, life jackets, fruit, drinking water, insurance and hotel transfers from Krabi Town, Ao Nang or Klong Muang. What you do not get is food — meals are not included — and the national park fee of ฿400 per adult and ฿200 per child is paid at the gate. The operator holds Thai tourism licence 34/03704 and allows free cancellation up to 48 hours before departure.
