I booked a four-day beginner kitesurfing course and I am entirely happy with it. Every instructor gives their best to move your learning on. They have an answer to every question, spot your weak points and adapt to you, and I learned a great deal because of it. I simply felt in very good hands.
What is this tour like?
A 1- to 5-day beginner kite course on Flag Beach in the north of Fuerteventura, run since 1999 by the only VDWS-certified watersports centre on this side of the island. Day one is an hour of theory and three hours on the beach plus three free practice hours; from day two the lessons move to the open water from the school's boats. €175 for one day up to €570 for five, four students per instructor on the beach and two in the water.
The school is candid about what one day buys. The beginner course starts at 11:00 with an hour of theory — kites, the wind window, safety, tides and weather, and a look at the different kite and board sizes — followed by three hours on the beach: rigging up, launching, landing, basic flying, figures of eight, one-handed flying and relaunching. Then come three hours of self-improvement, which the school gives free and describes as something no other school offers: stay on the sand and practise, or come back the next morning between 10:00 and 13:00 before your boat session. The one-day course includes no time in the water at all, and the school says so plainly and advises booking two days or more.
Day two is the first water lesson, given in the open sea from the boats. It splits in two: body dragging first, using the kite to move across the water and relaunch it after a crash, then a session with the board. Every exercise is demonstrated by the instructor, who then hands over the kite and holds on to you until you are ready to practise alone. Day three goes straight to the board in two water sessions. By the end of day four the school expects you to ride back and forth downwind in both directions, and by the end of day five to ride across the wind and start looking at riding upwind.
The prices are €175, €285, €395, €485 and €570 for one to five days. An intermediate course of the same lengths costs the same, except that two days is €310; it starts at 10:00 with an hour's recap on the beach and then goes into the water. A one-hour private lesson is €75 at a 1:1 ratio, and the school recommends it for advanced riders wanting turns, jumps and rotations rather than for anyone who cannot yet ride upwind. The VDWS international kite licence, book included, is €20, and it lets you hire equipment at other centres on your next trip.
Two practical notes. Water time is always shared with one other person, and the school states four per instructor on the beach against two in the water — it says openly that other schools keep four even in the water. And on refunds: Flag Beach operates a strict no-refund policy with one exception, the standard beginner and intermediate kite courses of two to five days, refundable only if lack of wind stops you finishing the course before you leave the island. The school notes that this does not extend to courses booked as part of a package, and its terms make each client responsible for their own holiday and personal accident insurance.

What do guests say?

“We did a 3 day kite surfing course. Lorenzo and Theo were our instructors and were really good at explaining and making us feel comfortable! What could be improved: personally, I felt like the boat experience was a bit chaotic, not 1 instructor for 2 people, a lot of back and forth between other kiters and students.”
“I did a 5 day introduction one on one course. I alternated between Robin and Paul as my instructors. Both were excellent and patient with me. I haven't tried any wind sports before and there was a lot to learn and using muscles I have not used before. My main tip is to build up some leg stamina and strength beforehand.”
“I had a really nice experience with this school and I can definitely recommend it! I participated in a 5 day intermediate Windsurf course. The lagoon where we went surfing was so beautiful! During the course days, the wind got stronger and stronger and I recognized that I don't have the skills to manage this kind of wind. The school was pretty flexible.”
