I had a really nice experience with this school and I can definitely recommend it! I participated in a 5 day intermediate Windsurf course. The lagoon where we went surfing was so beautiful! During the course days, the wind got stronger and stronger and I recognized that I don't have the skills to manage this kind of wind. The school was pretty flexible and they offered me to participate in the course.

What is this tour like?

A 1- to 5-day windsurf course in the north of Fuerteventura, taught at Flag Beach and in the El Cotillo lagoon by the only VDWS-certified centre on this side of the island. Day one starts with a pick-up anywhere in Corralejo and three to four hours of theory, rigging, the simulator and board balancing; days two and three are three to four hours on the water. €90 for one day up to €360 for five, at most eight students per instructor.

The beginner course starts at 10:00. Flag Beach collects you from your hotel or wherever you are staying in Corralejo and drives you to the beach, and the first three to four hours cover wind, currents, right of way, safety and equipment; you learn to rig a sail, handle it on the beach and use the simulator, and by the end of that session you are in the water doing board balancing. Days two and three are another three to four hours each on the water, learning to sail across the wind, sail upwind, tack and steer. At the end of the course you can take the level 1 windsurfing certificate.

The improver and renewal courses run out of the El Cotillo lagoon, starting at 09:00. The improver is aimed at people with roughly thirty hours of windsurfing behind them: eight hours over two days, four hours a day, teaching the fast tack, the gybe, getting into the harness and the beach start, and at the end you can take the level 2 or level 3 certificate. There is also a two-day renewal course for bringing rusty skills back. Prices are €90, €175, €260, €350 and €400 for one to five days, against €90, €175, €220, €290 and €360 on the beginner side.

A private one-to-one hour costs €75 with material not included, is taught only by the centre's best windsurfing instructor and covers whatever you ask for — from the basics to aerials, switch stance, tacks and gybes. The VDWS international windsurf licence, book included, is €40, and it is what lets you hire equipment at other centres on a later trip.

If you want to sail on your own between lessons, the rental list is the same shape as the school's other price tables: a complete windsurf setup is €70 for half a day, €80 for one day, €140 for two and €180 for three; board or sail only is €35 for half a day or a day, €70 for two days and €105 for three; a harness or a wetsuit is €5 a day. The rental page points at a third-party insurance product, and the school's terms make each client responsible for their own holiday and personal accident insurance.

One caution about the unit, the same as on the school's kite page: the list gives course prices without saying "per person", while stating a maximum of eight students per instructor. Read the figure as the price of a course place and confirm with the office how a second participant is charged.

What are the highlights?

  • A VDWS level 1 windsurf certificate at the end of the beginner course, level 2 or 3 after the improver
  • Boards and sails from Fanatic and North — Gecko, Viper, Freewave and Blast, with E_PACE and Super Hero sails

FAQ

Do they collect me from my hotel?
On the beginner course, yes. The school picks you up from your hotel or wherever you are staying in Corralejo and takes you to the beach; days two and three start the same way.
How long is a day of the course?
Three to four hours. That applies to the theory-and-beach first day and to the water days that follow. The improver course is four hours a day over two days, eight hours in total.
Where does the teaching happen?
The beginner course uses Flag Beach and the El Cotillo lagoon; the improver and renewal courses run from the El Cotillo lagoon on the north-west coast, starting at 09:00 rather than 10:00.
How big is the group?
Up to eight students per instructor on the windsurf side. That is more than the school's kite ratio, where it teaches four on the beach and two in the water; a private hour is €75 if you would rather not share.
Which course do I need if I have windsurfed before?
The improver course, which the school aims at people with around thirty hours behind them and which teaches the fast tack, the gybe, the harness and the beach start. If you have simply not sailed for a while, there is a two-day renewal course.
Do I get a certificate?
You can take the level 1 windsurf certificate at the end of the beginner course and level 2 or 3 after the improver. The international VDWS licence with the book is a separate €40 and is what other centres will want to see when you hire.
Is the price per person?
The price list gives the course price and does not use the words "per person", but it does set a maximum of eight students per instructor. Beginner course: 1 day €90, 2 days €175, 3 days €220, 4 days €290, 5 days €360. Improver and renewal course: 1 day €90, 2 days €175, 3 days €260, 4 days €350, 5 days €400. A private lesson of 1 h is €75, material not included. Treat the figure as the price of a course place and confirm with the office how a second participant is charged.
Can I hire a board between lessons?
Yes, and the school addresses rental to intermediate and advanced sailors going out solo. A complete setup is €70 for half a day and €80 for a day; board or sail only is €35; a harness or wetsuit is €5 a day. Insurance for the rental is a separate third-party product linked from the rental page.
What are the centre's opening hours?
The beach base runs 10:00–19:00 from April to September and 10:00–17:00 from October to March; the office is open 08:30–17:30 Monday to Saturday. Office, beach.

“My experience with Flag Beach is incredible. They are a benchmark for windsurfing and watersports in Fuerteventura. I took four "improver and renewal" windsurf lessons with them and the experience was perfect. The instructors look after their students throughout and give practical, effective advice.”

“I did a 5 day introduction one on one course. I alternated between Robin and Paul as my instructors. Both were excellent and patient with me. I haven't tried any wind sports before and there was a lot to learn and using muscles I have not used before. My main tip is to build up some leg stamina and strength beforehand.”
