It was all so well organised from start to finish. We cruised Phang Nga Bay and did mini excursions by canoe into secret lagoons.

What is this tour like?

Hong by Starlight is John Gray's Sea Canoe's signature evening run into Phang Nga Bay. A motor escort boat carries you and the kayaks out; from there you go through tidal caves into the hongs, the hidden lagoons that open inside the limestone islands. You do not have to paddle — your guide does that.

After dark the trip changes character: you launch a krathong of your own and watch bioluminescent plankton light up around the hull. The company has worked this water since 1983 and took the SKAL Ecotourism Award in 2008. Ten hours door to door, with national park fees already in the price.

FAQ

What does ฿3,950 cover?
One adult on the ten-hour Hong by Starlight trip: return transfer from your Phuket hotel or the airport, the operator's equipment, experienced guides, a light lunch and dinner, national park fees and traveller insurance.
Do I need kayaking experience?
No. The kayaks are two-seaters and the guide does the paddling, so the trip works for people who have never been in a kayak.
What exactly is «Hong by Starlight»?
It is the operator's evening trip into Phang Nga Bay on a motor escort boat: kayaking through tidal caves and hidden hongs, a krathong launch, and bioluminescent plankton once it is dark.
How long does the day take?
Ten hours. Pick-up is between 10:20 and 11:15, and you are back at your hotel between 21:00 and 21:30.
Where does the trip start, and is transfer included?
From Ao Por pier in Thalang, on Phuket's east side. The return transfer from your Phuket hotel or from the airport is included in the price.
Are the national park fees on top?
No — they are inside the ฿3,950. On many Phang Nga Bay trips the park fee is collected separately on the day, so it is worth checking that line before you compare prices.
How much is it for children?
The ฿3,950 is per adult. The operator runs separate categories for children aged 7–12 and infants under 6 but does not publish those amounts, so we ask and confirm the figure with you before booking.
Who runs the trip?
John Gray's Sea Canoe, on this water since 1983 and holder of the SKAL Ecotourism Award 2008. Google rates the company 4.9 across 731 reviews.

“It is quite a long day: pickup at 10:30, drop-off at 21:15. The pickup and communication are great, but the agency was busy and there was some waiting.”
