Ayia Napa & Protaras, Cyprus · 3h · €80 per person for the 2–3 hour try dive at Green Bay, about an hour underwater · EN
Honestly one of the best ocean experiences I've ever had! Our instructor picked us up from our hotel right on time and took us diving. He kept the theory simple and informative before driving to the location of the dive. He helped us get all our gear on and headed into the water, where he first let us practise with the equipment, watchful and patient the entire time. Finally came the deep dive, and we went down a good 8–9 metres, posed with some statues, got some amazing photos which were emailed to us, free of charge. We saw so many different fish, and they even got up close and personal with us too.
What is this tour like?
Easy Divers is a PADI 5-star IDC centre on the road between Protaras and Cape Greco, and its Discover Scuba Diving costs 80 €, with more of the day already paid for than most.
The price list is unusually honest about what that number covers. Its header says all prices include VAT and local taxes, transfers from local accommodation, and tanks and weights; a footnote adds that pick-up runs from Protaras, Pernera and Kapparis, and that guests staying in Ayia Napa pay 5 € a head for the transfer. Full equipment, defined on the same page, is BCD, regulator, wetsuit, boots, fins and mask. And the photographs the instructor takes are sent to you unedited at no charge — the edited set is the paid version, at 15 € per person.
The programme itself runs two to three hours, of which about an hour is underwater. It happens at Green Bay in Protaras, the shallow bay every centre on this coast uses for beginners: the depth is six to ten metres and there are ancient-style statues and columns on the bottom. The shape of the session is the standard one — a medical questionnaire filled in on site, a briefing on the gear and on breathing underwater, practice in waist-deep water until you are comfortable, then a guided tour down to ten metres.
The age floor here is twelve, higher than at the Cypriot centres that start at ten; the page says families with children of ten or eleven should contact the centre directly for a special arrangement. No experience is required and you do not have to be a strong swimmer, though the centre expects you to be comfortable in the sea.
Two pieces of timing advice come from the centre and are worth taking seriously. You cannot dive and fly on the same day, so plan the dive at least 24 hours before your flight. And the centre runs morning and afternoon slots that book up in summer, so use the online reservation system rather than turning up.
If one dive is not enough, the same list continues: a follow-up try dive is 70 €, and the MUSAN package that adds the sculpture museum to this programme on the same day is 150 €.
