We hired them for a couple of dives, and it is a very family-like dive centre, with very pleasant people as well as very professional. They are very attentive and answer any question you may have. It is really worth recommending, and the diving area off the coast of Cancún is spectacular. Booking our dives with this centre was the right call.

The operator describes MUSA (Museo Subacuático de Arte) as a project to take pressure off the natural reef of the National Marine Park: it opened on 26 November 2010 and is planned to grow to 12 galleries with nearly 1,364 artificial habitats for marine life. The centre's own pages place it in two ways — off the coast of Isla Mujeres on the dive page, and in two areas, Punta Nizuc at the southern tip of Cancun and Playa Mujeres to the north, on its location guide — and the dive page does not say which site the boat goes to or whether both tanks are spent among the sculptures. Cancun Scuba Center works from the Imperial Laguna hotel in Punta Cancún, by appointment only, because the team is usually out diving.

What are the highlights?

  • Two tanks at MUSA for certified divers, $110 per person — the same price the centre's rate card gives for a two-tank reef dive
  • The operator's page lists nine works by Jason deCaires Taylor: The Silent Evolution, The Garden of Hope, Dream Collector, Man on Fire, The Promise, Inertia, Anthropocene, Inheritance and Void
  • Open since 1990 and run by its owner, Juan Carlos Garrido; the centre says it dives in small groups
  • Not certified: one tank at MUSA with a lesson for $120 per person, sold on the same page

  • —At the centre on Nichupté lagoon

Cancun Scuba Center is based at the Imperial Laguna hotel (Faranda), Calle Quetzal, Punta Cancún, and opens by appointment only.

  • —By boat to the museum

Divers ride out with their tanks on board. The dive page does not name the site; the centre's location guide describes Punta Nizuc as the shallower area and Playa Mujeres, towards Isla Mujeres, as the deeper one.

  • —Among the sculptures

The figures are cast to act as artificial reef: the operator writes that the museum's aim is to increase the reef's biomass and give marine life new places to settle.

  • —The concrete Beetle

A Volkswagen Beetle cast in concrete sits on the sand among the museum's pieces.

  • —The second tank

The price covers two tanks; the page does not say where the second one is dived. The centre notes that all its Cancun dive sites lie inside the National Park, that most dives are drift dives and that depths run from 30 to 75 ft.

What's included in the price?

  • Two tanks for certified divers, as stated on the MUSA page
  • A guided boat dive with the centre's team
  • Purified drinking water — the centre asks you to bring a refillable bottle

What's not included?

  • Hotel transport: available, priced according to your hotel
  • Dive computer rental, $10
  • 5% surcharge on credit and debit card payments
  • Tips — the centre suggests 10–15% if you are happy with the service

What should you know before you go?

Who it’s for
Certified divers who want to see the MUSA sculptures and prefer a small, owner-run centre. Without a certificate, take the one-tank option with a lesson from the same page.
Level
A diving certification is required for the two-tank price. The centre's Cancun dives are mostly drift dives at 30–75 ft; the MUSA page does not give a depth for the museum.
What to bring
Your certification card, swimwear, a towel and a refillable water bottle — the centre is trying to cut plastic bottles. A doctor's authorisation if you have a heart condition, asthma, high blood pressure or epilepsy. Cash or a card; cards cost 5% more.
Meeting point
Cancun Scuba Center, Hotel Imperial Laguna (Faranda), Calle Quetzal, Punta Cancún, hotel zone, 77500 Cancún, Quintana Roo, on Nichupté lagoon. Open by appointment only — the team is usually out diving. Hotel pick-up can be arranged for a fee that depends on your hotel.

FAQ

How much will it cost two certified divers?
$220, two people at $110 each. Paying by card adds 5%, which makes $231; tips are extra, and the centre suggests 10–15% if you are satisfied.
I am not certified. Can I still dive MUSA?
Yes. The centre's rate page sells a one-tank Discover Scuba dive, lesson included, at $120 per person. The two-tank price of $110 is for certified divers only.
Is dive equipment included?
The MUSA page lists only the two tanks. The rate card prices a dive computer at $10, and only the private charter page says rental equipment and National Park tickets are included. Ask the centre about gear and the park fee when you book.
Where exactly is the underwater museum?
The dive page puts MUSA just off the coast of Isla Mujeres. The centre's location guide describes two areas: Punta Nizuc, at the southern tip of Cancun with shallow water, and Playa Mujeres, in the north towards Isla Mujeres, with deeper water.
Where do we meet?
At the centre in the Imperial Laguna hotel (Faranda), Calle Quetzal, Punta Cancún, hotel zone. It opens only by appointment, so arrange the time in advance; the centre can also collect you from your hotel for a fee.
Is there hotel pick-up?
Yes, but it is not in the $110. The rate page says the centre offers transportation and that the price varies with the hotel you are collected from.
What is the cancellation policy?
Full refund 15 or more days before the dive, 50% between 14 and 8 days, no refund within 7 days or for a no-show. If the port authority closes the port for weather, you get a 100% refund.
Are there medical restrictions?
Yes. With a heart condition, asthma, high blood pressure or epilepsy, the centre requires a physician's authorisation before any scuba activity. The booking form asks about these conditions.
When is visibility best?
The centre's MUSA location guide names December to April, the dry season, as the best time: calmer seas and clearer water. It adds that other months are possible, with more variable weather.
Can I pay in pesos?
Yes. The centre shows its rates in US dollars or the equivalent in Mexican pesos. Card payments carry a 5% surcharge.

“Had a great time doing a refresher plus 2 dives with Juan Carlos. He and his team have everything dialed in- well organized, no rush, and they picked really interesting dive sites. Before each dive there was a clear, thorough briefing, so I always knew what to expect underwater. The dives themselves were awesome, smooth and well-run from start to finish. Totally satisfied, and I’d recommend Juan Carlos to anyone looking for a relaxed, professional diving experience.”

“I went diving very spontaneously two days in a row and had a huge amount of fun. Alfredo and Carlos are great dive instructors who showed us really exciting spots. The equipment was taken care of completely; you really had no work at all yourself. All in all a great experience and a very nice crew on board! Thanks as well to the boat captains :-) The dive school is highly recommended — I felt very well looked after.”

“We booked a refresher course in the pool and a guided dive the following day. Franc took plenty of time for us and we felt excellently prepared. During the sea dive we were always well looked after and the atmosphere was superb. We felt very safe and the equipment was great too. You can tell that real experts with a lot of experience work here. We strongly recommend booking the photos as well — the pictures are absolutely top! A big plus for us was also how easy it is to reach by public transport.”
