Had an amazing day diving with Abyss! They were able to accommodate two try dives for my friend, and I tagged along as open water certified. Hannah was an absolute dream to spend time with — she made us feel very calm, safe and prepared! And tons of laughs! Simon and Hannah were both super on top of communication and booking as well. Very professional and very fun all around!

What is this tour like?

Discover Scuba Diving is PADI's first-time programme, and Abyss runs it as a single morning rather than a rushed hour. The centre's own timing: meet at the dive centre at nine, back at about one. Between those, a briefing and theory session, kitting up, and one guided dive with an instructor.

What makes this version worth noting is what sits inside the hundred euros. Dive insurance is included — at most centres on the island that is a line you pay separately, from seven or nine euros a day. So is all the necessary equipment, and a PADI certification of completion at the end. The centre's blanket note on the price list is that course prices include all the equipment required.

The programme is open from ten years old and asks only that you be in good physical health; the centre publishes its medical questionnaire on the site so you can read it before you arrive rather than at the counter. There is no swimming test mentioned and no certification prerequisite — this is the entry point.

Where you dive depends on the day. Abyss uses three shore sites on the east coast, and the shallowest, El Jablito, is described by the centre as perfect for first-time splashers, thirteen metres maximum with good conditions all year. That is the natural site for a first dive.

If one dive turns out not to be enough, the price list has an answer: a DSD additional dive at 55 €, the same as a single fun dive for a certified diver. And if you want to go all the way, the centre's Open Water Diver is 450 € for four dives with equipment included.

One caveat: this is an English-speaking operation. Two Spanish-speaking reviewers, in 2016 and 2021, said they could not be served in Spanish. If you need another language, confirm it before booking.

What are the highlights?

  • One morning: meet at 09:00 at the dive centre, back by about 13:00
  • From ten years old, with no experience required
  • Dive insurance is included, not sold on top
  • You leave with a PADI certification of completion
  • A second dive on the same programme costs 55 €

FAQ

Do I need any experience or a certification?
No. The centre describes the programme as tailored for beginners; the only prerequisites it publishes are being at least ten years old and in good physical health.
How long does the morning take?
One morning: the centre usually meets at 09:00 and has you back at about 13:00. The programme is described as one day.
Is insurance included, or do I pay it separately?
Included. The programme's own list names dive insurance among the inclusions, which is worth noting on an island where most centres bill it separately from 7 to 9 € a day.
Where will the dive be?
At one of the centre's three shore sites on the east coast. The shallowest, El Jablito at thirteen metres, is the one the centre calls perfect for first-time splashers, with good conditions all year.
Can a child do it?
From ten years old, which is the PADI minimum for the programme and the age the centre publishes as a prerequisite.
Do I get a certificate?
A PADI certification of completion, which the programme lists among the inclusions. It is not a diving licence — for that the centre's Open Water Diver is 450 € with four dives.
Can I do a second dive?
Yes. The price list has a “DSD Additional Dive” line at 55 € for one dive — the same as a single fun dive for a certified diver.
What do I have to fill in before diving?
A medical questionnaire — the centre publishes it as its own page on the site, so you can read the questions before you arrive. The only health requirement it states for this programme is being in good physical health.
Which language is the briefing in?
English. Two Spanish-speaking reviewers, writing in 2016 and 2021, complained that they could not be served in Spanish. If you need another language, settle it before booking rather than on the morning.

“Thank you very much Hannah and Simon for the awesome experience! I started with a try dive and afterwards signed up for the PADI Open Water dive course. Hannah and Simon are super kind and patient personalities. Simon is an excellent dive trainer and you can ask all the questions that come up. They plan the courses mostly for couples and single persons so that he can concentrate much better on every individual's progress and needs.”
