It was an outstanding experience. I guess we were very lucky and saw a mother whale with her calve and a bit later a big group of dolphins who swam with our boat. There's always a risk that you won't find any animals at all. Nino was our captain on the 'Magic Dolphin'. He obviously had good experience and instinct where to go to. Karolina was also a great and charming host and also spotted the animals very well. Good to know: it is very windy on the boat and can quite get wet. Dress warm enough and better have some changing clothes in the car.

Magic Dolphin exists to solve a scheduling problem. The other Magic & Sailing boats want four hours of your day; this one wants two, and spends all of it on the thing most guests booked a boat for in the first place. It runs from Morro Jable, the harbour closest to the deep water off the Jandía peninsula where the animals feed.
The operator states that 29 cetacean species have been recorded in the Canaries. The ones the crew names as most common here are bottlenose, common, spotted, striped and rough-toothed dolphins, along with beaked whales and pilot whales, and larger whales pass through as well. Spring and autumn usually give the most favourable conditions, though the trip runs year round.
The operator is unusually direct about what it will not promise. Sightings depend on nature and are never guaranteed; the crew observes at a distance rather than chasing, follows its own responsible-watching rules, and asks guests to do the same. It is equally direct about the catering: drinks are included and food is not, because a fast two-hour search is the wrong shape for a served lunch. If sea conditions allow, a brief swim stop is added at the end.
A place costs €49 for an adult and €39 for a child aged two to eleven. Babies aged nought to two cannot take part for safety reasons — worth knowing before booking, because this is one of the few boats on the island where a baby is not simply free. Pick-up runs from selected points in Costa Calma, Esquinzo, Morro Jable and Jandía; the operator says these are not door-to-door but usually about a five-minute walk from most accommodation in the area.
What are the highlights?
- Two hours, not half a day — the short-format option in the Magic & Sailing range
- A dedicated wildlife boat, 11.72 m long and 4.48 m in the beam, fast enough to cover ground
- Bottlenose, common, spotted, striped and rough-toothed dolphins, pilot whales and beaked whales are the usual species
- An open bar of cold drinks throughout — the operator is clear that food is not part of this trip

- —Out of Morro Jable Port

- —The search
Most of the two hours goes here, with the crew explaining what is being looked for and how close the boat may go.
- —Short swim stop, if the sea allows
Added at a calm spot when conditions permit — it is a bonus rather than a fixed part of the itinerary.
- —Back in port after two hours
Short enough to leave the rest of the day intact.

“A pleasant little two-hour trip out of Morro Jable with Nino and Alejo. It works in every language — German, English, Spanish and French. The dolphins turned up and were majestic. At the swimming spot the water is a magnificent colour. A really lovely outing. I would do it again without hesitation.”
“A dream come true! Dolphins swimming right next to the boat! It was only two hours but I enjoyed it from the first minute to the last. Nino and Alejo are wonderful guides — they gave a lot of information and found the dolphins quickly. I can definitely recommend this trip. Drinks included and the chance to swim afterwards.”
“We looked and looked for dolphins and never found any. Money down the drain, a shame.”
