A spectacular four-hour trip out of the port of Morro Jable. We were on this new catamaran, anchoring off the south coast of the island; on board we relaxed in the sun, swam in crystal-clear water, saw dolphins close up, drank good wine, had lunch and spent a lovely day with a very warm and friendly crew. Truly a beautiful day.

Magic Select is the largest of the Magic & Sailing fleet: 22.80 metres long, 10.50 metres in the beam, with enough deck to spread out even when the boat is full. It sails from Morro Jable, the big southern harbour that sits closest to the deep water where the Canary cetaceans feed — the crew describes the search as respectful observation rather than pursuit, and says openly that nature decides whether anything shows up.
The second half of the trip belongs to the Jandía coastline. When the sea allows it, the catamaran anchors in a calmer spot for a swim, and lunch is served during the stop: Mozarabic chicken with rice and vegetables, the dish the boat is known for, or a Mozarabic vegetarian burger with Zahara-style infused rice for anyone who does not eat meat. Water, soft drinks, beer and white or rosé wine are open through the whole four hours. Food allergies need to be flagged at least 48 hours before the trip.
The fare is €79 for an adult, €40 for a child aged two to eleven, and nothing for babies under two. A pick-up service runs from selected meeting points in Costa Calma, Esquinzo, Morro Jable and Jandía, which in practice means most guests staying in the south do not need a car. Places are limited and the operator recommends booking ahead.
What are the highlights?
- A 22.80-metre catamaran with a 10.50-metre beam — wide, stable and roomy under sail
- Mozarabic chicken with rice and vegetables cooked on board, with a vegetarian burger as the meat-free option
- An open bar of water, soft drinks, beer and white or rosé wine for the whole four hours
- Cetacean search in the open Atlantic — the operator states plainly that sightings are never guaranteed

- —Looking for dolphins and whales
The operator states that more than 29 cetacean species have been recorded in Canary waters; the crew searches, watches from a distance and does not promise a sighting.
- —Swim stop off the Jandía coast
Anchored in a calmer spot when sea conditions allow — the operator makes the stop conditional, not fixed.
- —Lunch on board
Mozarabic chicken with rice and vegetables, or the vegetarian burger, served during the swim stop with the bar open.

Quick questions
What do guests say?
“Top-class crew and boats. We left with only a minimal delay caused by guests who were late. Despite windy weather and a fair swell the catamaran was very stable. Four small notes about the Select: 1) we never got the feeling that anyone was actually looking for dolphins or whales — on Tenerife a very similar trip had the boats talking to each other over the radio; 2) it would have been huge fun for the passengers to raise at least a reefed mainsail and go without the engine; 3) the stop for swimming and eating was practically at the departure point itself, and it was far too long, so after 2 h 50 min of the four hours the trip already felt over; after the meal we only had 15 minutes along Morro Jable and then the harbour entrance; 4) standing there with a tip box as you leave the boat is too much — that option should be visible somewhere throughout the trip so that anyone who wants to can make a donation.”

“A catamaran cruise is a fantastic adventure. The catamaran is roomy and stable, which makes the trip comfortable and safe. The views of the sea and the coast are incredible, and the crew (Aaron, Feli, Alejandro and Annika) are very professional and friendly. Add good food and a free bachata lesson. The whole outing is a perfect chance to have fun or simply enjoy the calm on the water. I recommend it to everyone.”
