Peter Diving at Isla de Lobos — Air from the Surface, No Tank on Your Back (Punta Amanay)
Halfway between snorkelling and scuba: the tank floats on the surface and a hose feeds you air down to six metres. From 89 €, three hours by boat at Lobos, from ten years old. The instructor takes two people down at a time while the rest snorkel or wait on board, so a whole family can share one trip.

In addition we went also for Peter Diving with my wife. Unfortunately my wife got very bad sea sickness. Here the true professionalism of Punta Amanay's staff came through. It's easy to look professional when everything is going well, but it's when things actually go sideways that shows the qualities of the dive center, and Punta Amanay's qualities are exceptional. If I ever visit Fuerteventura again I will definitely make some more dives with them.
What is this tour like?
Peter Diving is a system, not a brand of scuba, and understanding what it does explains who it is for. The air cylinder stays on the surface, held by a float built for the purpose, and a hose runs down from it to your regulator. You can descend to six metres. Nothing heavy goes on your back, no certification is involved, and the operator describes it as easy, safe and suitable for the whole family.
Punta Amanay runs it as a three-hour boat trip to the water around Isla de Lobos. The practical detail that makes it a family product rather than an individual one: the instructor dives with two people at a time, and while they are down the others can snorkel or simply stay on the boat. Nobody is left standing on a quay waiting.
The centre is honest about the depth. Six metres does not sound like much, and it says so — but adds that even at that depth you will be surprised what the seabed near Lobos holds. The waters there are what the centre dives every day, more than twenty sites' worth.
Requirements are short: from ten years old, able to swim, healthy, comfortable in the water. And you cannot fly the same day, which is a rule of the activity and not a suggestion. Note the age — ten here, against twelve for the centre's scuba products in the sea, so this is the way a younger child gets under the surface with the rest of the family.
Included: the boat trip, a certified diving instructor's assistance, the necessary equipment and diving insurance. Not included: transport to or from the dive centre. One caveat on timing: the centre's experiences listing marks this product as available from July until November, and the activity page itself does not repeat that, so check the dates before you plan a winter trip around it.
