Great day spent fishing on one of the budget boats. The crew knew what to do and where to find fish. We had some slow patches, but that is what happens when trolling. Highlight of the day was the lunch they cooked on the boat — they used the fish we had caught that day and made sashimi, fish soup and fried fish. Awesome meal.

What is this tour like?

A whole Thai fishing cruiser to yourselves for the day: trolling out to Racha Yai, lunch at anchor in a bay, bottom fishing for grouper and snapper in the afternoon. ฿15,900 per boat for one to four anglers, ฿16,900 for five to eight, ฿19,000 for nine to twelve. Tackle, transfers and lunch included; Chalong pier at 08:30–09:00, back by 17:00.

The price is for the hull, not the seat. Two of you or four, it is the same ฿15,900, and the per-person figure is arithmetic you do yourself rather than a number the operator quotes.

These are the operator's P-Series boats — six Prasert-built Thai fishing vessels between 42 and 48 feet, inspected and serviced on the slipway every year, with licensed captains and crews. They are functional rather than luxurious, and the operator says so on its own site: the crews are local people who grew up on these boats, some speak English well, most have enough to get by, and the office is on call all day if something needs translating.

The day runs from a 07:30 to 08:00 hotel pickup to a 17:00 return at Chalong pier. Trolling starts soon after departure — tuna, mackerel, mahi-mahi, barracuda, sailfish — then the boat anchors in a bay at 12:30 for lunch and a swim, and at 13:30 moves to a bottom-fishing spot for grouper and snapper on rod and reel.

If you want Racha Noi instead, it is ฿4,000 more for fuel. Mask and snorkel sets rent for ฿100.

What are the highlights?

  • The whole boat is yours — ฿15,900 covers up to four anglers, not one
  • Two techniques in one day: trolling on the way out, bottom fishing after lunch
  • 42- to 48-foot Prasert cruisers, slipped and serviced annually, licensed boats and captains
  • Local captains and crews who grew up on these boats
  • Lunch cooked on board and a swim stop in a quiet bay

What should you know before you go?

Who it’s for
Families and groups who want the boat to themselves at the operator's lowest whole-boat rate. A keen angler after tournament-grade tackle should take one of the operator's better-equipped boats instead.
Level
No experience needed — the tackle is basic and easy to use, and the crew set the lines. The boats are functional Thai fishing cruisers, not air-conditioned sport-fishers.
What to bring
Sun protection and a hat — the decks are open — plus ฿100 per mask set if you want to snorkel at the lunch stop, and cash for tips.
Meeting point
Hotel pickup between 07:30 and 08:00 from the main areas; give your hotel when booking so the operator can send transfer details. The boat leaves Chalong Pier between 08:30 and 09:00 and returns there at 17:00. Racha Yai lies about 20 km south of Phuket, roughly ninety minutes out — the fishing is not in Phuket's own bay.

FAQ

Is ฿15,900 per person or per boat?
Per boat. One angler or four, the figure does not move. Five to eight anglers is ฿16,900 and nine to twelve is ฿19,000 — still one payment for the vessel, not a rate per head.
How many people fit on board?
Up to twelve. The published price tiers stop at nine to twelve anglers, and the operator's shared trips on the same boats are capped at twelve people fishing.
What tackle is provided?
Equipment is in the price for both parts of the day: trolling gear on the run out and rod-and-reel bottom fishing in the afternoon. The operator runs basic easy-to-use tackle on these budget boats; if you want tournament-grade gear, that is what its higher-priced boats are for.
What might we catch?
Trolling targets tuna, mackerel, mahi-mahi, barracuda and sailfish; the afternoon bottom fishing is for grouper and snapper. It is fishing, so nothing is promised.
Can we snorkel at the lunch stop?
On a private charter, yes — the boat stops in a bay and mask and snorkel sets rent for ฿100. The operator is honest that the snorkelling there is not remarkable; it is more about looking around than about the reef.
Do the crew speak English?
The operator is straightforward about this: the captains and crews are local people with years on these boats, some speak English well and most have just enough to get by. The office speaks fluent English and is on call from the captain all day if something needs translating.
Is this the right boat for a serious angler?
The operator says plainly that at this price the shared version of the trip is not for the keen, avid fisherman, and that anyone wanting a higher standard of boat, crew and English should look at its faster or better-equipped vessels. The private charter gives you the boat and the day to yourselves, which helps, but the tackle stays basic.
What happens if the weather turns?
Cancellation for weather or breakdown is the captain's decision alone. There is usually forewarning, and the operator contacts you to discuss either cancelling or moving to another day, case by case.
When must I cancel by?
At least 48 hours before the pickup time. A late cancellation or a no-show is charged in full, and the operator states this is agreed at the moment the booking is confirmed.
Could the boat be swapped?
Yes, and the operator says so in its terms. The six P-Series boats are rotated so every crew gets its share of work, and in the case of a breakdown or weather the operator may change boat, crew or destination — an equal or better vessel where possible, and a price adjustment if only a lesser one is available.

“I enjoyed a great day on the water. Well organised, from hotel pickup to drop-off. The fish we caught were cooked on the boat for our lunch. We moored at an island for lunch with time allowed for a cooling swim. The skipper and his team were very helpful. I would definitely do this trip again.”

★★★★★

“Great trip. We booked for two days and caught a lot of tuna through trolling. We also had a good haul of grouper with bottom fishing, and jigging yielded some excellent catches as well. I would particularly highlight that the top anglers were two twelve-year-olds.”
