The short version

One or two people ride the same jet ski, and the second rider is not charged.

The other way to ride is guided. An hour out of the same station passes Green Bay and Konnos Bay, rounds Cape Greco and stops in the Blue Lagoon to swim, at €150 per jet ski with one rider and €200 with two.

The operator will not send the safari out with a single machine — two is the minimum and four the maximum — so the smallest safari booking it quotes is €300. Cheapest first:

  • €50 per jet ski — Baywatch Watersports, fifteen minutes off Kalamies Beach on a Sea-Doo or a Yamaha machine, with a life vest and a safety briefing before you leave the sand; twenty minutes is €60 and thirty is €90, and up to four machines go out on one booking.
  • €150 per jet ski — Baywatch Watersports, a guided hour to Cape Greco and the Blue Lagoon with a swim stop, €200 with a second rider on the same machine; the driver must be 18, everyone follows the guide, and the group goes out with two to four jet skis.

What's included

  • The jet ski for the slot you booked (Sea-Doo or Yamaha)
  • Life vest
  • Safety briefing before departure
  • A second rider on the same machine at no extra charge
  • Jet ski for the one-hour guided safari
  • Professional guide leading the group the whole way
  • Life jackets
  • The Blue Lagoon swim stop

Not included

  • A guide on the water — that is the operator's separate Jetski Safari
  • Hotel transfer — the operator does not mention one; you come to the beach
  • Photos and video of your ride
  • The second rider on your machine — 50 € on top of the 150 €
  • Hotel transfer — the operator does not mention one
  • Photos and video

Good to know

  • Anyone staying in Protaras or Pernera who wants a short, no-fuss ride without booking in advance.
  • No experience needed, by the operator's own statement; a safety briefing is given before every ride. Baywatch does not publish a minimum age for the plain rental — it states 18 for the driver only on its guided Safari, so ask at the station.
  • Swimwear, a towel and sun protection. Photos are not part of the rental, so bring a waterproof case if you want your own.
  • Two or more riders who want the Cape Greco coast rather than a short blast off the beach.
  • No licence and no experience are required; the driver must be 18 and every participant must follow the guide. Up to two people per machine.
  • Swimwear under your clothes for the Blue Lagoon stop, a towel and sun protection.
  • Baywatch Watersports station on Kalamies Beach, Pernera, Protaras (contact address: Ellinon, Protaras, Cyprus). No transfer — you come to the beach.
  • Baywatch Watersports on Kalamies Beach, Pernera, Protaras — the same station as the jet ski rental.

FAQ

Does Cypriot law let a visitor ride a hired jet ski without a licence?
Not in those words. A temporary visitor staying under thirty days may drive a hired high speed small vessel after signing a binding declaration with the owner, who must first check that the visitor knows what the 1999 regulations require. Anything outside that takes a learner's or an operator's licence.
Is there a limit on how far from the beach you may go?
A limit of the order of 700 metres is set for jet skis in the Cypriot safety-equipment sheet, but the line is cut off in the English text, so the exact wording is not available. In practice the station and the local authority set the zone; on a guided ride, the guide does.
What safety equipment is compulsory on a jet ski here?
Life-saving gear of at least 50 newtons of buoyancy for every person carried, an engine cut-off lanyard, an in-water hull inspection, a user manual, an emissions test and a noise level under 74 dBA at seventeen metres. Anchors, flares, extinguishers and radios are required on boats, not on jet skis.
Who allows a watersports station to trade on the beach?
The municipal or community council, by public tender under the Foreshore Protection Law. The holder must be at least twenty-one, hold a first-aid diploma and a lifeguard diploma, have five years in the trade and craft registered with the Shipping Deputy Ministry.
Which Pernera is Kalamies Beach in?
The village of Pernera next to Protaras. The other Pernera is a beach inside Ayia Napa, about twelve kilometres away, where the underwater sculpture museum stands. Bookings and taxi directions go wrong on exactly this.
When is the sea calmest for a ride?
The station recommends the early hours and says the sea is calmer then. Beyond that, no Cypriot state source publishes monthly wind data for Ayia Napa or Protaras, so there is no windy month to plan around. The official beach cards call the water calm, which is a statement about the sea and not about the wind.
Cash or card at a beach station?
Carry cash. Cyprus has used the euro since 2008, and the official guidance on card acceptance names hotels, larger shops and restaurants — a beach watersports desk is not on that list. On tipping the official line is that it is entirely at the customer's discretion; no percentage is named anywhere.
Is the water around Cape Greco protected?
Yes. The Department of Fisheries and Marine Research lists marine protected areas at Kavo Gkreko and the Ayia Napa sea caves, plus two artificial-reef areas. Restrictions apply inside them, but the decrees exist only in Greek, so ask the station what holds on the day.

A jet ski here costs €50 to €90 per jet ski for a slot of fifteen, twenty or thirty minutes, and a guided hour to Cape Greco is €150 per jet ski. The price follows the machine: two people may ride one for the same money, and the safari costs €200 with a second rider.

Kalamies Beach is in Pernera, the village next to Protaras, on the eastern side of Cape Greco. The name is a trap: there is a second Pernera, a beach inside Ayia Napa about twelve kilometres away, where the underwater sculpture museum lies. Only one of the two is a jet ski address, and a taxi told the wrong one will take you to the other end of the coast.

Does Cyprus ask for a licence?#

The operator writes that no licence is needed, and that is a true statement about how it runs the ride rather than a summary of the law. What the Shipping Deputy Ministry publishes is this. A jet ski is a high speed small vessel, and driving one normally takes a learner's licence from seventeen, valid only in the company of an operator's licence holder, or an operator's licence from eighteen, which needs a practical and a theory exam at a nautical club and a medical certificate.

The note that lets a visitor ride is narrower than «no licence needed»: a temporary visitor staying on Cyprus for fewer than thirty days may drive a hired high speed small vessel if a binding declaration has been signed with the owner of the craft and the owner has checked that the visitor has the knowledge the 1999 regulations require. Somebody is responsible, a paper is signed, and the rule stops at thirty days.

No minimum age is set for that case at all — the ages you see quoted are the operator's own rule, and the eighteen on the safari page is Baywatch's.

How far out can you go?#

Not far, and the figure has to be handled carefully. The state's safety-equipment sheet sets the buoyancy of life-saving gear by how far a craft works from the shore, and its jet ski line reads «Jet Ski (restricted to 700 m…)» — the sentence is cut off in the English PDF, so a distance limit of the order of 700 metres exists, but its exact wording is not in the text anyone can read.

In practice the zone is set by the station and the local authority, and on the safari by the guide in front. The equipment side is clearer: buoyancy of at least 50 newtons for every person carried, an engine cut-off lanyard, an in-water hull inspection, a user manual, an emissions test and a noise level under 74 dBA measured at seventeen metres.

Anchors, flares, extinguishers, radios and first-aid kits are required on boats and specifically not on jet skis.

What tells you the station is in order#

Two signs, literally. A craft hired out to the public is category B under the 1999 regulations, which means an annual inspection, a circulation licence, and a copy of the local authority's permission to use the shore in the inspection file. Category B craft must display a price list for the hire in English and Greek and keep a log book of users' particulars, and every craft must display the owner's and operator's duties in both languages.

The pitch on the sand is a separate permission again: a licence for public beach facilities from the municipal or community council, awarded by public tender under the Foreshore Protection Law to somebody at least twenty-one who holds a first-aid diploma, a lifeguard diploma and five years in the trade. That is why the prices are on a board rather than in somebody's head.

When is the best time to ride?#

The station recommends the early hours, saying the sea is calmer then; months it does not state, so ask. What the state defines is the bathing season, 1 May to 31 October, the period when water quality in designated bathing zones is monitored, while the official cards for the Blue Flag beaches of this coast put lifeguards on duty from April to October.

Those are two different periods about two different things. The weather points at the same half of the year: at the Paralimni station the mean daily maximum stays above 26 °C from May to October and summer rainfall is close to zero, over the 2002–2011 averaging period the Cyprus Department of Meteorology reported through the WMO.

No Cypriot state source publishes monthly wind data for Ayia Napa or Protaras, so there is no windy month to plan around — only the morning you turn up.

Kalamies
the beach in Pernera the station works from, on the Protaras side of Cape Greco.
Pernera
two places share the name: the village beside Protaras, which is this one, and a beach inside Ayia Napa some twelve kilometres away.
Category B
the class a Cypriot high speed small vessel gets when it is hired out to the public: annual inspection, a bilingual price board and a log book of users.
  • That the figure you were quoted is per jet ski. Two of you on one machine pay it once.
  • Which slot you are buying. Fifteen, twenty and thirty minutes are three different prices, and the clock starts at the beach.
  • On the safari, how many machines are going. It does not run with one, and the smallest booking the operator quotes is €300.
  • The declaration you will sign, and that the person signing it is the one who will drive.
  • Cash. The official guidance on card acceptance names hotels, larger shops and restaurants, and a beach desk is not on that list.

Important

The water either side of Cape Greco is protected. The Department of Fisheries and Marine Research lists MPA Kavo Gkreko (R.A.A. 115/2018), MPA Ayia Napa Sea Caves (R.A.A. 46/2023) and two artificial-reef areas at Ayia Napa and Paralimni; restrictions apply inside marine protected areas, but the decrees exist only in Greek, so ask the station what holds on the day rather than trusting a list.
