Routes and departure times

Red River sells the same night in dong: 380,000 VND (about $15) per adult from 1.4 m tall for four to four and a half hours, 16:30 to 21:00, on a wooden boat rigged with squid lights, with dinner cooked on board, insurance and a free transfer in Dương Đông town.

The serious charter is John's private big-fish day: eight hours, 05:30 to 13:30 or 13:30 to 18:30, with breakfast and lunch on board, fishing and snorkelling equipment, life jackets and ten live squid baits per person. The fare is quoted per guest and slides with the size of the group, cheapest per head first:

  • $182 per person — a group of four.
  • $234 per person — a group of three.
  • $337 each — two guests.
  • $646 — one guest alone; six or more on request.

Sunset and night squid fishing with John's Tours

We took a tour of the three islands with the cable car at the end. The boat was very comfortable and thanks to its slow speed, we were able to enjoy the view and the sea breeze! The food was also delicious. I would like to thank Stella for her help with the booking and our guide Tan for organising everything with a smile!

Sunset and night squid fishing with John's Tours

The tour was well organized and we had a good time except for some caveats. DO NOT get the slow boat - we did the 3 islands tour but the boat was way too slow and for 3 more dollars you can save way more time between islands which gives you much more time. The main office has a bathroom so definitely try to squeeze one out before a long bus ride + a long boat ride. The boat also has a bathroom which wasn't terrible. The lunch on the boat was great, super healthy and homecooked right on the boat. The first location wasn't great, and I can't believe they consider that an island as part of the '3 islands'. Water not super clear and not too much marine life. The second spot was much better. The third island is where you get off the boat and onto the island with actual amenities like bar and restaurant and bathrooms. Overall it was a nice day but if I could redo it, I would not choose the slow boat.

FAQ

Is the price per person or for the boat?
Per person on all three. John's writes 'USD/Pax' for the night squid trip and heads the big-game column 'Price / Pax (USD)'; Red River publishes an adult rate of 380,000 VND (about $15) per guest. On the big-game charter the per-person figure falls as the group grows — $646, $337, $234, $182, $170 for one to five guests — which in practice is a private boat divided among the people on it.
What tackle comes with the trip?
On the night trips, everything you need: John's provides local fishing equipment and life jackets, Red River provides dedicated squid tackle — line and artificial bait — on a boat rigged with the lighting system. The big-game charter adds fishing equipment, snorkelling gear and ten live squid baits per person, with extra live bait at 25,000 VND (about $1) each. Note that fins are not available in children's sizes on John's boats.
Can children come along?
On the night squid trips, yes. John's charges $12 for ages 4 to 9 and carries under-4s free; Red River measures by height and charges 266,000 VND (about $10) — 70% of the adult price — from 1.0 to 1.4 m, free below 1.0 m. The private big-game charter does not publish a child rate.
What happens if the weather is bad?
For the private big-game charter John's states plainly that if the weather turns, the tour is moved to another day. The two night squid trips publish no weather clause of their own, so agree with the operator what happens to your date before you pay.
Can we eat what we catch?
The night trips feed you either way: John's serves a light dinner, Red River cooks dinner on board. Neither operator promises that your catch becomes the meal, and none of the three trips guarantees a catch at all — squid fishing under lights is a matter of the night you get.

What do the two squid nights cost?

Two of these three trips are the same evening in two currencies, and the differences are small but real. John's leaves at 17:00 and returns at 21:00 for $17, with a light dinner and an English-speaking guide.

Red River leaves half an hour earlier, at 16:30, runs up to four and a half hours, cooks dinner on board, includes travel insurance and a 500 ml bottle of water per guest, and will drop you at the Phu Quoc night market at the end instead of at your hotel if you prefer.

Its boat is rigged with the squid-fishing lighting system, and it charges 380,000 VND (about $15) per adult measured by height rather than age.

How does the private big-fish day price work?

The private big-fish charter works differently. The fare is written per guest but behaves like one boat divided by heads: $646 alone, $337 each for two, down to $170 each at five. Nobody in this group gets cheaper by fishing less — they get cheaper by bringing people.

The day is eight hours, starting at 05:30 with a 05:15 pick-up if you take the sunrise start, and the fare carries breakfast and lunch, the guide, the tackle and ten live squid baits per person; extra live bait is 25,000 VND (about $1) each.

Important

if the weather turns, the trip moves to another day.

What else should you settle before booking?

That leaves the transfer and what the fare does not cover:

  • Transfers are free from Dương Đông with both operators, and from further out Red River charges: 100,000 VND (about $4) per guest from Ông Lang, Cây Sao and Hàm Ninh, 200,000 from Cửa Cạn and Vũng Bầu, 400,000 from Bãi Dài and Gành Dầu.
  • Red River's night trip excludes soft drinks, beer and alcohol ordered with the meal, VAT invoicing and personal spending; John's excludes 'other personal expenses' and asks big-game guests to bring their own towels and sunscreen.
