Routes and departure times

At these prices the day usually carries everything: Vietnam Active includes equipment with a dive computer, all fees, a PADI guide, breakfast, lunch and hotel transfer, and takes a maximum of four guests; Phu Quoc Diving Club picks up at 7:30, dives at 10:00 and 11:30 and puts lunch on the table at 12:30.

Centres that price in dong start lower for a shorter day. Here is the rest of the ladder, cheapest first:

Did my Advanced Open Water Diver and Nitrox Certifications with instructor Thinh after not having dived for 7 years. He made me feel so safe and secure. Our class was small. Just three students for one instructor. Thinh is highly skilled and very calm as an instructor. His instructions are very clear and he is a great teacher. It was a wonderful adventure for me as a first timer in scuba. We've seen many beautiful fishes and corals and other seabed inhabitants near little Hòn Kim Quy island just south of Phú Quốc. The opening briefing before we started was quite simple even for those who never dived in their life. Guys on the boat worked as a team and were very helpful and friendly to us. Our scuba master Khoa is a professional and skillfully guided us throughout all our dives, checked our condition and maked sure we won't be lost. The water was clear by the way and the weather was great. I enjoyed my adventures very much, definitely one of the strongest good memories about the Island and Vietnam.

Do I need a certificate to dive here?
Not for a first dive. Phu Quoc Diving Club, Ecodive and Kimie's all run beginner days at $100 per person with two dives, Vietnam Active at $110; Kimie's charges $85 in the north without a certificate against $78 with one, Flipper's Try Diving starts at 1,900,000 VND (about $73) for one dive, and OnBird's Discovery Scuba is 2,150,000 VND (about $83). A certificate is required for exactly one thing in this section: Kimie's night dive is for certificate holders only.
Is the price per person or per dive?
Both units are in use, so read the line. Vietnam Active, Phu Quoc Diving Club, Ecodive and Kimie's quote a per-person day that already contains two dives. Flipper prices per person and per dive count: 1,400,000 VND (about $54) is one dive in the north, 1,900,000 two. Vietnam Explorer writes '/1 person', Ecodive writes 'USD /Pax', Kimie's writes 'per person' in words. Poseidon is the exception — it publishes 'Only $80' and 'Only $90' without a unit, so ask before booking.
What does the price include?
At the full-day centres, most of it. Vietnam Active lists high-quality equipment with a dive computer, all fees, a certified PADI instructor or divemaster, light breakfast, lunch, fruit, snacks and drinks, pick-up and drop-off, and nitrox on request. Phu Quoc Diving Club lists a full set of equipment, transfers, a professional guide, two dives, drinks, snacks and lunch. Flipper includes pick-up from where you stay, lunch, snacks and drinks. Kimie's includes pick-up in Dương Đông town and diving equipment, and asks for everyone's shoe size and weight in the booking form; other areas are surcharged. Ecodive and Vietnam Explorer publish no inclusion list at all.
From what age can children dive?
Where an age is published, it is ten. Flipper's Try Diving is from 10 years old, and OnBird's small-group Discovery Scuba is from 10. The other centres do not publish a minimum age for their beginner programmes, so ask when you book rather than assume.
When can I dive in the north of the island?
In the dry season only. Kimie's states that its northern dives operate from November to April, and Flipper gives the closed window in dates: no diving in the north from 10 May to 20 October. Northern trips leave from Dương Đông harbour and run about ninety minutes out to the site, usually Turtle Island, at around nine metres. Southern diving out of An Thới is not restricted to a season by these operators.
What visibility should I expect?
Vietnam Explorer is the operator that answers this in print, and it does so honestly: diving is accessible all year round, the best site depends on the prevailing conditions, and because Phu Quoc sits close to the Mekong delta, visibility even in peak season is rarely that of Vietnam's eastern seaboard. Depths follow the same logic — Kimie's northern dives are at about nine metres, Ecodive works around eighteen with up to thirty for advanced divers.

Once you notice that $90 repeats across three centres, the price stops being the question and the group size takes over.

How big is the group?#

OnBird goes one way and builds a ten-guest beginner trip that runs from 8:00 to 16:30 for 2,150,000 VND (about $83). The rest go the other way:

  • Vietnam Active: a maximum of four guests on the fun diving day, and no more than two per instructor on the beginner day.
  • Phu Quoc Diving Club: one instructor with one or two beginners, but fun divers go out on a big shared boat.
  • Kimie's south: a one-to-one try dive.
  • Ecodive: a Discover Scuba described as one-on-one.

North or south — what changes?#

North and south are two different seasons, not two directions. Northern dives only run in the dry season, November to April, from Dương Đông harbour, about an hour and a half out to a site it usually names as Turtle Island, at around nine metres. Flipper prices the north below the south, from 1,400,000 VND (about $54) against 1,800,000.

The south is the deeper, year-round option: Ecodive dives around 18 metres, with up to 30 for advanced divers, multi-level and drift dives, and there is a trade-off: diving is accessible all year, but because the island sits close to the Mekong delta, peak-season visibility is rarely what you would find on Vietnam's eastern seaboard.

What should you settle before you pay?#

Poseidon quotes 'Only $80' for the dive-plus-snorkelling programme and 'Only $90' for fun dives without saying whether that is per person, so ask the school for the unit before you pay.

Is there anything besides the standard boat day?#

If you want to dive without getting on a boat schedule, Red River's Seawalker at the Ocean World coral park is the outlier of the section: a four-hour trip with 15 to 20 minutes on the sea floor in a helmet, or scuba instead, one instructor per guest, 1,350,000 VND (about $52) for the adult ticket — ask for the child rate when you book.

Night diving is a single option with a single rule. Kimie's takes certificate holders only, 17:00 to 21:00, two dives, $150 per person, and states the price is identical on the north and the south side of the island — so the choice of harbour, Dương Đông or An Thới, is yours and costs nothing either way.
