Diving on Gozo: what to know
Xlendi, Marsalforn or Qala — where are the dive centres?#
Three of these centres sit in Xlendi Bay on the south coast: Ritual Dive, with SSI-, PADI- and RAID-certified instructors, an on-site training pool and no more than 4 divers per instructor; Utina Diving, a PADI 5 Star Dive Centre with up to 4 divers per instructor and a "dive your tank" policy; and Gozo Dive St Andrew's, founded 30 years ago, which teaches SSI, RAID and SDI/TDI and runs its own dive boat, DIVEMANIA, for up to 22 passengers.
Atlantis Dive Centre, a PADI 5-Star IDC Centre and BSAC centre, is in Marsalforn. Blue Waters Dive Cove is in Qala, a 5–10-minute drive from Mġarr Harbour and, by its own account, no more than 20 minutes from any dive site on the island.
Try dive or first course?#
A try dive needs no certificate. Blue Waters charges €70 for a 3-hour PADI Discover Scuba Diving and Ritual Dive €75 for one dive in half a day, both from age 10. Utina's single try dive is €90 for 2.5–3 hours; its double try dive is €165 for 5–6 hours and can be split over two days.
Ritual's two-dive option costs €130 for half a day, and Ritual credits a try dive towards the Open Water course. For a certificate in less time, the PADI Scuba Diver course qualifies you to dive to 12 m under a professional's supervision: €330 for 2 days at Blue Waters, €350 for 1.5 days at Utina. The PADI Open Water Diver takes 3 days and certifies you to 18 m with a buddy: €460 at Blue Waters, €470 at Gozo Dive St Andrew's, and at Utina €560 for one person, €530 each for two and €490 each for 3 or 4.
At Blue Waters and Utina the price includes the online course, certification and equipment.
Certified divers: shore dives, boat dives and packages#
Blue Waters calls shore diving the most popular way to dive on Gozo, with sites at most 20 minutes away by car. It charges €45 per guided shore dive (instructor as guide, tank and weights), with free transport to the site, and packages of €160 for 4 dives, €280 for 8 and €300 for 10, or €30 a dive on the largest. Gozo Dive St Andrew's charges €50 per accompanied dive with tank, weights, shore transport and guide, for at least 2 divers, and €37 a dive from the 11th.
Utina's single shore dive is €56, and €48 a dive on packages of more than 10. Full equipment costs €20 a day at Blue Waters (a dive computer is €7 extra), €10 a dive or €15 a day at Gozo Dive St Andrew's, and €20 a dive or €30 a day at Utina, computer included.
Boat dives open up Comino, with the Santa Maria Caves and the P31 wreck that Blue Waters singles out. Gozo Dive St Andrew's runs boat dives on DIVEMANIA from Xlendi or Mġarr most days from April to November: €15 for a standard boat dive trip, or €40 for a full-day trip with 2 dives.
Blue Waters adds €40 per person for two dives at Comino; Utina charges €40 for two Comino boat dives and €20 for a boat dive on Gozo's north coast. A nitrox tank costs €7.50 extra at both Utina and Gozo Dive St Andrew's.
Beyond Open Water: wrecks, courses and tec#
Utina points out that most wrecks around Malta lie deeper than 18 m, so you need at least Advanced Open Water; the P31 on Comino is open to Open Water divers, with weekly trips from April to October. The PADI Advanced Open Water course costs €300 at Blue Waters (2–3 days, tanks and weights included, equipment €20 a day), €370 at Gozo Dive St Andrew's and €480 for one person at Utina (€410 each for 3 or 4).
Night dives add €7 at Blue Waters, €15 at Gozo Dive St Andrew's and €25 at Utina. Atlantis Dive Centre in Marsalforn teaches PADI, TDI and BSAC technical courses, from €450 for the PADI Tec 40 course to €1,900 for PADI Tec Deep Trimix, and rents O₂-clean twinsets and stage cylinders by the day.
When to go?#
Utina dives all year. From December to March the water is 14–16°C and the sites are quieter; from June to October it is 24–28°C and busier. Atlantis Dive Centre names April to November as the warmer months, and Gozo Dive St Andrew's runs its boat dives most days from April to November. Every diver fills in a medical form, and if any condition on it applies, a doctor's clearance is needed.
Other ways onto the water from Gozo#
If you would rather stay on the surface, JoyRide at Hondoq Bay rents self-drive boats from €100 per boat for a 3-hour half day and runs boat trips to the Blue Lagoon from €10 per adult. For diving on the main island, see diving in Malta.
