Reef, wreck or cave?#
The local reefs are the cheap end: Coral Point charges $80 per diver for two tanks, plus $10 a day for rental gear, and is back on shore around 13:00, and Go Dive asks $100 with the full set of gear in the price. The wrecks cost more: Dive Dominicana prices the St George at $180 per diver, the same as its Atlantic Princess dive, and asks for Advanced Open Water because the freighter lies at 35–40 m.
The cave is a third thing entirely: El Chicho sits inland in Cotubanamá national park, and Go Dive charges $120 a dive for it.
- St George
- a 260-foot freighter sunk off Bayahibe, the area’s signature dive.
- Atlantic Princess
- a small cruise boat lying at about 12 m, shallow enough for snorkellers to look down on.
- Divemaster
- the certified guide who leads a dive without teaching a course.
- Try Scuba
- SSI’s supervised first dive for people with no certificate.
Can I dive without a certificate?#
Yes. Blue Dreams Diving runs its first dive from the beach at $79 per person: the entry is gradual rather than off a boat, the minimum age is 8 and there are at most two students per instructor. SSI materials, all fees, a Try Scuba card and a certificate are included.
What is not in the price#
Go Dive includes the full gear set but charges $10 a day for a dive computer; on its cave dives park entrance fees and tank carrying are extra. Coral Point charges $10 a day for rental gear, and its package prices stack by the day: 4 dives $160, 6 $240, 8 $310, 10 $365, and reef snorkelling is US$40.
- Whether a computer is included: at Go Dive it is a $10 daily extra.
- Which day you need: Blue Dreams runs Saona on Mondays and Fridays and Catalina on Tuesdays and Saturdays, privately on any day by request.
- What the transfer costs: Blue Dreams charges $15 from Dominicus or Bayahibe and $100 from Bávaro or Punta Cana for up to six people.
Important
Coral Point’s $80 for two dives does not include equipment. Rental gear is $10 a day, which is why the booking page shows the package at US$80.00 without equipment and US$90.00 with it. Guests staying in Dominicus or Bayahibe are collected from the hotel free of charge.
