  • Mask, fins and snorkel, if you need them

Not included

  • Cozumel Marine Park fee — cash only, paid on the boat
  • Tips for the crew

Good to know

  • People aged 10 and up who are not certified but have tried diving before and want two real reef dives in the marine park. For a very first breath underwater the operator recommends its shore session instead.
  • No certification. You should be in reasonable health, comfortable in the water and able to swim; the instructor supervises you directly throughout.
  • Swimsuit, towel, drinking water, a change of clothes, a hat and a rash guard, plus a light jacket in winter. Cash for the marine park fee. The operator recommends doing the PADI Discover Scuba eLearning before you arrive.
  • Certified divers who want two reef dives in a small group — six divers at most on the boat. Not for cruise passengers: the operator no longer takes them on this trip.
  • Open Water certification or higher. Cozumel is drift diving; the operator says the current is usually mild, around one knot. After a long break a private guide or Discover Scuba is required.
  • Your certification card and logbook details (the booking form asks for logged dives and your last dive), cash in dollars or pesos for the balance, and a rash guard instead of sunscreen — sunscreen of any kind is banned in the marine park. The operator recommends booking at least a month ahead.
  • Cozumel Marina ASIPONA Fonatur, Carretera Costera Sur km 6, San Miguel de Cozumel. The instructor meets you at 1:40 pm in the waiting area next to the drugstore. There is no land pick-up — dive operators are not allowed to collect guests by road, so take a taxi. WhatsApp or text from Mexico; from the USA;.
  • Marina Fonatur, Carretera Costera Sur, Cozumel — the operator has no walk-in shop and sends written directions after booking. Guests of hotels inside the marine park (Presidente, Landmark, Costa del Sol, Iberostar and others on its list) are picked up by boat from their pier or beach. From the cruise piers it is a 5–15 minute taxi ride. WhatsApp.
  • Sand Dollar Sports Dive Center, Carretera Costera Sur Km 3.2, Cozumel, on the beach.

We had booked the Discovery dive with two dives included with Blue Note Scuba. The mood throughout the whole day was great! Mariana and Rita were both simply first class! Mariana took great care of us and looked after us during the two dives. Very likeable and kind! I would recommend it like this any time! An absolutely deserved 5 stars!

I had a great time diving with Blue Note! My instructor Lu was patient and thorough and made sure that I had a safe and enjoyable experience. Being that I am not a certified diver, she was relaxed and kind, but made sure that I was safe and comfortable throughout the experience. I would definitely use them again!

The dive was truly incredibleee!! The feeling of being surrounded by colourful fish, corals and that special silence under the sea is something full of calm. Without a doubt, it's an experience I would recommend to anyone who wants to connect with nature in a different and unique way. 🌊🐠🤿 Thank you so much to the instructor and the guide for this lovely experience.✨🤍

Discover Scuba in Cozumel — Two Boat Dives, No Certificate

I am a former PADI instructor and have been diving in Cozumel since the 1980's. I have seen good operators and have heard stories about bad operators over the years. I assure anyone reading this review that Blue Notes Scuba in Cozumel is one of the very best. I have made multiple trips over the past three years and plan to return again in 2027. The boat crew and divemaster were definitely worthy of five stars. They were very accommodating and extremely safe. Their divemaster, Ludyvine, had eyes in the back of her head and her situational awareness of the divers in her group was impressive. As a fellow dive professional, I noticed. She was 100% squared away and safety conscious. Kudos to her! On my last trip I reached out to the owner of Blue Notes with a very specific request for a small group of friends that I brought to Cozumel. The owner, Doug, was able to coordinate our needs with a small private vessel, equipment, crew, etc and I very much appreciate his exceptional service. Note that the attached pics were taken aboard the small private boat I requested as opposed to Blue Notes usual dive boat that is fast, well equipped and even more accommodating.

FAQ

How much does diving in Cozumel cost?
ScubaTony charges $135 per certified diver for a two-tank boat trip with the marine park fee and taxes included, or $125 each when five or more trips are booked. Blue Note Scuba's Discover Scuba for non-certified divers is 3,300 MXN per person plus the park fee in cash.
Can I dive in Cozumel without a certificate?
Yes, on Blue Note Scuba's Discover Scuba: skills practice in shallow water, then two dives on the reef under an instructor's direct supervision, from age 10. It is an introduction, not a certification. Without any scuba at all, Sand Dollar Sports runs SNUBA for $74: a regulator on a 20-foot surface air line, from age 6.
Is the marine park fee included?
At ScubaTony, yes, together with taxes. At Blue Note Scuba it is paid in cash on the boat; its price list gives 220 pesos, or $15, per diver per day, and the booking page for this program says 100 pesos.
Can cruise passengers join a dive?
Not on ScubaTony's regular two-tank trips, which no longer take cruise passengers. Blue Note Scuba's afternoon Discover Scuba leaves at 2:00 pm and returns four hours later; send the operator your ship's times. Dive operators cannot pick up at the cruise terminal.
How big are the dive groups?
ScubaTony caps each boat at six divers and runs three boats to keep it that way; every group dives with a PADI instructor or divemaster, who is also your buddy if you came alone.
Can I wear reef-safe sunscreen?
No. The Cozumel marine park rules published by ScubaTony forbid any sunscreen, reef-friendly and biodegradable ones included, as well as gloves and knives. Wear a rash guard or long wetsuit.
How do I pay?
At ScubaTony a PayPal deposit confirms the booking, and the balance is paid in cash, dollars or pesos, on your last diving day. At Blue Note Scuba a card deposit is taken on booking and the balance is charged to the card or paid in cash.

Below both sits SNUBA. Sand Dollar Sports, a PADI 5 Star centre on the beach at Km 3.2 of the southern coastal road, puts you on a regular regulator fed by a 20-foot air line from a raft on the surface, for $74 per person and about two hours including the briefing, from age 6 and with no certificate. It is not a scuba dive — the hose limits you to 20 feet, 10 for children aged 6–7 — but it is the cheapest way below the surface on Cozumel.

Both boats leave from Marina Fonatur on the southern coastal road, now also called Marina ASIPONA Fonatur. Neither operator collects you by road: ScubaTony has no land transport and picks up by boat from the piers of some hotels inside the marine park, and Blue Note Scuba explains that dive operators may not pick up by land, so you take a taxi.

What is a Cozumel reef dive like?#

A drift dive. ScubaTony says the current is mild most of the time, about one knot, that the boat moves to another site if it is too strong, and that the ride to the reef usually takes under half an hour. The marine park holds more than 20 dive sites, in its count; the site is picked on board from divers' requests, their level and the sea, and no particular site is guaranteed.

What if you are not certified?#

Then it is Blue Note Scuba's afternoon: you meet the instructor at the marina at 1:40 pm, go over the equipment and skills on the way out, practise in shallow water and make two supervised dives on the reef, back four hours later. It is an introduction, not a certification. The operator meant it for people who have dived before; for a very first breath underwater it points to its shore session instead.

What does the day really cost?#

At ScubaTony two certified divers pay $270 for one trip, and $30 more each for a full rental set of regulator, BCD and wetsuit; mask, fins and snorkel are free. At Blue Note Scuba two people pay 6,600 MXN plus the park fee, which its price list gives as 220 pesos, or $15, per diver per day, while the booking page says 100. The operator suggests a tip of $12 to $15 per tank.

Marina Fonatur
the marina on the southern coastal road where both boats board; Blue Note calls it Marina ASIPONA Fonatur.
Discover Scuba
a supervised first taste of diving with an instructor, not a certification.
Drift dive
a dive carried along the reef by the current while the boat follows your bubbles.
  • Your card and log: after a long break ScubaTony requires a private guide or Discover Scuba.
  • Which departure suits you: ScubaTony suggests the afternoon boat to divers with few logged dives.
  • Cash: ScubaTony takes no cards for the balance, and Blue Note's park fee is cash only.
  • 220 pesos per diver for the park fee at Blue Note Scuba, to be safe.
  • A taxi to Marina Fonatur.

Important

The Cozumel marine park rules that ScubaTony publishes forbid any sunscreen in the water, reef-safe and biodegradable ones included, as well as gloves and knives. Cover up with a rash guard or a long wetsuit instead.
