  • 950,000 VND (about $37) — Kimie's five-hour group tour, photos and video thrown in.

Snorkeling boat trip with Vietnam Active — two stops in the south

Did my Advanced Open Water Diver and Nitrox Certifications with instructor Thinh after not having dived for 7 years. He made me feel so safe and secure. Our class was small. Just three students for one instructor. Thinh is highly skilled and very calm as an instructor. His instructions are very clear and he is a great teacher. If you're looking for a full-service dive centre where you will get excellent training, I think Vietnam Active won't disappoint you.

Snorkeling boat trip with Vietnam Active — two stops in the south

We had an incredible diving experience with Nico Sessario from Argentina. He is an amazing instructor n extremely knowledgeable, professional, and at the same time so much fun to dive with. He made us feel completely comfortable and safe throughout. On top of that, he captured some truly amazing photos for us. We did two dives with him, and both were unforgettable. Highly recommend diving with Nico!

Snorkeling boat trip with Vietnam Active — two stops in the south

It was a wonderful adventure for me as a first timer in scuba. We've seen many beautiful fishes and corals and other seabed inhabitants near little Hòn Kim Quy island just south of Phú Quốc. The opening briefing before we started was quite simple even for those who never dived in their life. Guys on the boat worked as a team and were very helpful and friendly to us. Our scuba master Khoa is a professional and skillfully guided us throughout all our dives, checked our condition and maked sure we won't be lost. The water was clear by the way and the weather was great. I enjoyed my adventures very much, definitely one of the strongest good memories about the Island and Vietnam.

FAQ

Is the price per person or per boat?
Per person on these shared trips, and several operators write the unit out: John's and Ecodive print 'USD/Pax', Kimie's writes 'per person' in words, Red River and Les Rives quote adult and child fares. OnBird's shop window shows a range labelled 'Group', but its own table is linear — 1,380,000 VND (about $53) multiplied by the number of guests. A boat hired whole is a different product with a different price.
What is usually included, and what is not?
The common package is the round-trip car and boat, an English-speaking guide, snorkel gear and life jackets, and lunch — Red River cooks seafood on board, John's and Vietnam Active serve lunch, Layla and John's sunset trip serve a barbecue. Red River and OnBird add travel insurance. Outside the fare you will usually find VAT (OnBird states it separately), drinks beyond the ones listed, gratuities, and paid attractions at the stops: Les Rives excludes the activity fees on Hon May Rut, Red River excludes the sea-walking and diving tickets at Ocean World, and Layla prices the Coral Park sea walk separately. Fins in children's sizes are not available on John's or Red River boats.
When is the season, and does the north work all year?
The north does not. Flipper states that snorkelling and diving in the north are unavailable from 10 May to 20 October, which leaves the November-to-April dry season for northern routes out of Dương Đông. The southern archipelago is the year-round side: OnBird says its southern tours run all year and are unaffected by the rainy season. The one southern trip with a published window is OnBird's Chillax sunset BBQ, sold October to May.
From what age can children come, and what do they pay?
Children are welcome on the shared boats, but the rules differ. John's charges $18 for ages 4–9 on the two-island day, $22 on the three-island day, $23 by speedboat and $41 on the sunset BBQ, with under-4s free. Red River prices by height: 560,000 VND (about $22) on the four-island speedboat and 504,000 VND (about $19) on the wooden boat from 1.0 to 1.4 m, free below 1.0 m. Les Rives charges 2,799,000 VND (about $108) for ages 4–12 on the island day, with infants 0–3 free. Layla carries children under 5 free. OnBird charges 75% of the adult fare from 4 to 14 on the small-group snorkelling trip and 80% from 4 to 12 on the Chillax trip, with the full adult fare from 155 cm.
What happens if the weather turns?
Usually the route changes, not the date. Kimie's chooses among Dam Ngang, Fingernail, May Rut and Hon Dam depending on conditions; Layla warns the islands may change and that if rain is forecast the barbecue moves into a restaurant. A few operators go further in writing: Les Rives states that in bad weather or unsafe conditions the tour may be rescheduled or cancelled, and Red River says it may cancel its Ocean World schedule on its own initiative in rough seas and refund the price. Where the operator publishes nothing, agree the rule before you pay.
Which harbour do these trips leave from?
An Thới port in the south for the archipelago trips — John's, Red River, OnBird, Kimie's group tour and Layla all transfer you there by road first, typically leaving the hotel between 07:45 and 08:30. Les Rives boards at An Thoi Harbour itself and picks up only within a ten-kilometre radius of it. Dương Đông harbour is used for northern routes, which in practice means Flipper's northern day in the dry season.

ElyNot sure which one is yours? Ask Ely — she knows every tour in “Boat & catamaran tours”.Ask Ely

Almost every boat day here runs south, into the An Thoi archipelago, and leaves from An Thới port after a road transfer. What separates one day from the next is the hull rather than the island list, what the fare does not carry, and whether you sail in the morning or into the sunset.

Which side of the island do the tours leave from?

The exception worth knowing is Flipper, which sells the same 900,000 VND (about $35) day in two directions — north out of Dương Đông or south out of An Thới. In practice the north runs from November to April and the south the year round: OnBird states its southern tours are unaffected by the rainy season, while its Chillax sunset trip is sold October to May.

Wooden boat or speedboat — what changes?

A wooden boat is slower and roomier and the galley works; John's two-island day uses a boat with local fishing tackle. A speedboat buys time, and the gap between John's speedboat day and its wooden three-island trip is the clearest price for an hour saved on the island you get to see. Above that, the money goes into headcount: OnBird's boat is built for twenty and carries eight or ten; Layla runs four to twelve; Les Rives caps at six.

OperatorWhat you getPrice
Red RiverWooden boat, seafood lunch cooked on board720,000 VND (about $28)
John's ToursTwo-island day, boat with local fishing tackle$25
John's ToursThree-island trip, wooden boat$32
John's ToursThree islands by speedboat$33
Red RiverFour-island run by speedboat800,000 VND (about $31)

What does the fare not carry?

John's and Red River price children by different rules — John's by age ($18 for 4–9 on the two-island day, free under 4), Red River by height (560,000 VND (about $22) from 1.0 to 1.4 m, free below). OnBird charges children 75% or 80% of the adult fare depending on the trip, adds a holiday surcharge of 100,000 VND (about $4) per person on Vietnamese public holidays and Tết, and leaves VAT outside the price.

Is an afternoon departure a cheaper morning?

Afternoon and sunset departures are a route of their own, not a discount version of the morning. John's sunset BBQ speedboat runs 13:00 to 19:00 for $59 and puts dinner on the island; Layla's Sunset Escape leaves at 12:45 and is back around 19:15 at the same 1,950,000 VND (about $75) as its morning twin; Les Rives sails 15:30 to 18:00 from An Thới for 2,799,000 VND (about $108), with beer, water, soft drinks and fruit.

What is worth checking before you book?

  • Pick-up: free from central Dương Đông for most operators and surcharged elsewhere — Red River asks 100,000 VND (about $4) per guest for Ông Lang, Cây Sao and Hàm Ninh and 400,000 VND (about $15) for Bãi Dài and Gành Dầu.
  • OnBird publishes its own transfer grid up to 500,000 VND (about $19) per group; Ecodive’s $35 snorkelling place comes without a transfer, so plan on reaching the centre yourself.
  • The island list for the day: Kimie's picks among Dam Ngang, Fingernail, May Rut and Hon Dam on the morning, and Layla warns the islands can change.
  • Weather rewrites the route rather than the day: rain moves Layla's barbecue into a restaurant, and Les Rives says plainly that squid at sunset is a matter of luck, not part of the programme.

Important

the two directions are not interchangeable — snorkelling and diving in the north are unavailable from 10 May to 20 October, so book the southern route in those months.
