A boat day out of Ao Nang goes one of three ways: to the four islands close in, to the Hong group inside a second national park, or across to Phi Phi and Maya Bay. Jet skis, parasailing and wakesurfing are not sold in Krabi; there are bases for them on Phuket. The dry months are December to March.
How far are the islands, and how long is the day?
The four islands sit close in: Koh Poda is 4.9 km from Ao Nang in a straight line, Chicken Island 5.8 km, Railay 3.0 km — which is why that trip is a half day on a longtail. Koh Hong lies 23.4 km out and Phi Phi Don 33.3 km, and both become full days. The distances are straight-line, measured from coordinates; sailing time depends on the hull and the swell.

What is not in the fare?
The park fee, almost always, and it is handed to the rangers in cash on the day — the islands have no ATMs.
The department's announcement for the Phi Phi island zone, which names Koh Poda too, sets ฿400 (about $11) per adult and ฿200 per child; the general park scale is ฿200 and ฿100, and that is the figure several operators print on their own pages. Koh Hong belongs to another park, Than Bok Khorani, at ฿300 and ฿150.
Morning start or sunset run?
The early birds leave in the dark: Koh Tour collects from 05:40 for a 06:30 departure out of Nopparat Thara pier, Krabi Ezy Trails from 06:20 for 07:45 out of Ao Nang.
Sunset trips are a separate product rather than a discounted morning — Barracudas casts off at 14:45 and is back at 20:00, Krabi Sea Cruise leaves Ao Nam Mao at 14:00, and Thalassa's private catamaran picks up at 12:45 and night-snorkels at 19:30.
What is worth checking before you book?
- Which pier: Ao Nang, Nopparat Thara, Ao Nam Mao or an operator's own jetty — the pick-up time follows from it, from 05:40 on the early birds to 13:00 on the junk boat.
- Your transfer zone. Inside Ao Nang the pick-up is free; Klong Muang, Tub Kaek and Krabi Town cost ฿100 (about $3) per person with Barracudas, ฿500 with Krabi Vip Tour and ฿500 one way with Boat and Beyond.
- The price unit. Some trips are sold per person and some per boat, and per boat can mean a base headcount plus a surcharge — Thalassa's ฿12,000 (about $332) longtail to Hong covers two people, with ฿2,300 for every adult after that.
- The days it runs: the Krabi Sea Cruise junk boat sails Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays only.
- Cash in baht for the rangers, and whether your operator has already folded the fee in — Krabi Vip Tour and Thalassa have, most of the others have not.
Important
Maya Bay is announced closed from 1 August to 30 September 2026, and even when it is open you may only wade in knee-deep — boats moor in Loh Samah bay on the far side and a walkway crosses to the beach. Simba writes that in those months it puts Bamboo Island in Maya's place; ask your own operator what it substitutes.
