What it costs

The private end is a different kind of day. Karst Aways runs Ao Thalane for ฿1,800 (about $50) per person with no more than four guests a day, a three-seat kayak for every two people and a home-cooked meal in a cove; the five hours are yours alone, and you pay in full after the tour, with no deposit.

Between the two ends sit mangrove half-days, cave routes and sunset paddles with a barbecue:

  • ฿695 (about $19) per person — Koh Tour, Klong Rud, three and a half hours, a swim in the lagoon and a fish spa at the pier.
  • ฿700 (about $19) per person — Saipoh Kayak, the mangroves at Baan Sai Poh, three hours with a local guide, water and seasonal fruit.
  • ฿895 (about $25) per person — Koh Tour, Ao Thalane, five hours through mangrove channels under the karst; a Thai set lunch adds ฿200.
  • ฿1,200 (about $33) per person — Ride & Raft, a sunset paddle at Ao Thalane with a barbecue on the beach, about six hours.
  • ฿1,795 (about $50) per person — Koh Tour, the sea caves at Bor Thor — Lod and the painted Pee Hua Too — seven hours with lunch and entrance fees inside the price.
  • ฿3,300 (about $91), unit not named by the operator — Sea Kayak Krabi, kayaking and snorkelling at Hong, Lao Lading and Pak Bia, 08:00 to 16:00.

Krabi Half-Day Kayaking at Ao Thalane (Koh Tour)

By far our greatest touristic experience around Ao Nang. Stunning views, great guide, and overall great tour. Easy pick-up at the hotel, convenient booking online, and a small group of 10 people.

KR K Rose
Krabi Kayak & Snorkel — Hong Island lagoon (Sea Kayak Krabi)

Fabulous day with guided kayak tour with Yussep. Then a few days later we did a boat trip out to the islands, going to remote beaches and seeing amazing landscapes.

AM Ari Margolis
Krabi Kayak & Snorkel — Hong Island lagoon (Sea Kayak Krabi)

We did the sea kayak trip with Sea Kayak Krabi and loved every minute. The mangrove forest, monkeys and quiet lagoons were amazing, and the cliffs and rock formations around us were so beautiful.

KM Keiko Matsuda

This was so relaxing and beautiful. It was so peaceful paddling through. The guide was kind and gave us plenty of time to enjoy the scenery.

FAQ

How much is it and is that per person?
Yes, per person: ฿895 (about $25) for an adult aged 13 and over, ฿795 for a child aged 4 to 12, and free for infants under 3. The operator's page prints «per person» under each rate. — Krabi Half-Day Kayaking at Ao Thalane (Koh Tour)
What is the published price?
The operator's package page reads «3,300 ฿ (08.00-16.00)» for the Hong Island full-day trip. It does not name the unit, so we confirm whether it is per paddler or per kayak before you pay. — Hong Island lagoon (Sea Kayak Krabi)
What does it cost?
฿695 (about $19) per adult aged 10 and over and ฿595 per child aged 3 to 9, both stated per person; infants aged 1 to 2 are free. The Klong Rud entrance fee is separate: ฿50 per adult and ฿20 per child, paid on arrival. — clear freshwater canal (Koh Tour)
Where is Baan Sai Poh?
In Nuea Khlong district, on the eastern side of Krabi province — about half an hour by scooter from Krabi Town, and a good deal further from Ao Nang than Ao Thalane is. — Baan Sai Poh (Saipoh Kayak Krabi)
Do I need experience?
No. The operator writes that no experience is necessary and that they have taken guests of most ages — their oldest was 82 — and fitness levels. The basics are covered in the safety briefing and there are life jackets for everyone. — Ao Thalane, four guests only (Karst Aways)
How old really are the cave paintings?
The operator says they are believed to be around 3,000 years old and that the cave is believed to be an ancient burial ground. Those are the operator's words and we pass them on as such, not as an archaeological finding. — Lod and Pee Hua Too caves (Koh Tour)
How long is it?
Half day or full day — the operator sells both. The full day is the one with lunch. — Ao Thalane mangroves (Sea Kayak Krabi)
Will we see bioluminescent plankton?
The operator does not sell this as a plankton trip and does not mention plankton on the page, so we do not promise it. Bioluminescence in Krabi is seasonal and depends on moonlight and water conditions. — Krabi Sunset Kayak at Ao Thalane with beach BBQ (Ride & Raft)
Is it dark on the water?
The slot runs to 19:30 and Krabi's sunset falls roughly between 18:00 and 18:45 through the year, so the last part of the evening is in low light or after dark. — Krabi Sunset Kayak & BBQ (Sea Kayak Krabi)
Is lunch included?
Not in the base price. A Thai set lunch is an option at ฿200 (about $6) per person; it is prepared while you paddle and is ready when you get back to the pier. With lunch the adult rate becomes ฿1,095 and the child rate ฿995. — Krabi Half-Day Kayaking at Ao Thalane (Koh Tour)

Most of the paddling here happens on the mainland rather than at sea: mangrove bays and canals between limestone walls, at Ao Thalane, Bor Thor and Klong Rud. The island day at Hong is the exception, and it is the only route on which a national park starts to matter.

Where do they take you, and how do the places differ?

Ao Thalane is the classic — mangrove channels with karst towers on both sides, roughly 30 km from Ao Nang. Bor Thor, in Ao Luek district, is about an hour's drive and swaps mangroves for caves: Lod, the painted Pee Hua Too and an inner lagoon. Klong Rud is fresh water and the shortest outing of all. Hong is the sea day.

PlaceWhat you seePrice
Klong Rud, Nong ThaleClear freshwater canal, a lagoon to swim in, a fish spa฿695 (about $19) per person
Baan Sai Poh, Nuea KhlongMangrove forest and hidden sea caves฿700 (about $19) per person
Ao Thalane, half dayMangrove channels under limestone walls฿895 (about $25) per person
Bor Thor, Ao LuekLod cave, the rock paintings of Pee Hua Too, an inner lagoon฿1,795 (about $50) per person
Hong, Lao Lading and Pak BiaKayaking and snorkelling around the islands, 08:00 to 16:00฿3,300 (about $91), unit not named

Sunset or morning?

Sunset paddles are their own product and end with food. Ride & Raft takes about six hours at Ao Thalane and finishes with a barbecue on the beach at ฿1,200 (about $33) per adult and ฿960 per child. Sea Kayak Krabi runs 15:00 to 19:30 for ฿3,500 and barbecues at its own café, again without naming a unit. Mornings are simply earlier: Klong Rud has three windows, 08:30, 13:00 and 15:30.

How many people share the boat and the group?

Karst Aways caps the day at four guests, puts two people in a three-seat kayak and sets your pick-up time personally the evening before; the start moves with the tide, so the mangrove stays passable. That is the private pole of the category — five hours at Ao Thalane for ฿1,800 (about $50) per person, with the route to yourselves.

What is worth checking before you book?

  • The price unit. Sea Kayak Krabi's page prints only the amount — ฿900 (about $25) for a half day, ฿3,300 for the Hong day, ฿3,500 for the sunset trip — and never says per whom, so confirm it when you book.
  • The transfer. Koh Tour picks up free inside Ao Nang and charges ฿100 (about $3) per person for Krabi Town and ฿200 for Klong Muang and Tub Kaek; Sea Kayak Krabi and Saipoh do not state on their pages whether pick-up is included at all.
  • Lunch. It is inside the price at Bor Thor, costs ฿200 (about $6) per person on the Ao Thalane half day, and is replaced by a barbecue on the sunset routes.
  • The drive. Ao Thalane is about 30 km from Ao Nang and Bor Thor about an hour away, so a half-day trip takes rather more than half your day.
  • Child fares start from different ages: with Koh Tour the adult fare begins at ten on Klong Rud and at thirteen on Ao Thalane, while Saipoh's child fare runs to ten.

Important

the Hong day is the only route here that enters a national park, and the fee — ฿300 (about $8) per adult, ฿150 per child — is handed to the rangers in cash. Sea Kayak Krabi's page does not say whether it is already inside the ฿3,300, so ask before you go.
