Chartering here means choosing a hull before choosing a route. A longtail is slow, open and made for the islands close to Ao Nang; a speedboat exists to cross to Phi Phi; the junk is a floating venue you book by the day.
Longtail or speedboat — what changes?
Distance decides it. Koh Poda is 4.9 km from Ao Nang in a straight line and Railay 3.0 km, which a longtail covers comfortably in a five-hour day. Phi Phi Don is 33.3 km away, and every charter that goes there is a speedboat or a premium hull with a six-to-nine-hour day behind it.
How many people does a boat price cover?
It depends on the operator, and this is the number to nail down first. Krabi Travel The Sea's ฿4,500 (about $125) buys the longtail for two to seven guests with no headcount surcharge — at seven that is ฿643 each, though lunch is not in it.
Wangsai prices by headcount inside the same hull, ฿6,250 (about $173) for one guest and ฿8,100 for ten. Boat and Beyond counts guests five to eight on a longtail and seven to ten on a speedboat as extras.
What does the charter not carry?
Meals, with Krabi Travel The Sea. Alcohol, almost everywhere — the junk has a stocked bar you pay for separately, and Wangsai excludes drinks outright. Transfers beyond the operator's zone: Boat and Beyond asks ฿500 (about $14) one way and ฿900 return for Klong Muang, Tubkaek, Krabi Town and Railay, while Krabi Travel The Sea includes only Krabi Town, Ao Nang and Klong Muang.
What is worth checking before you book?
- How many guests the base price covers, and what each extra one costs — the difference between a fixed boat and a boat priced by headcount is the whole comparison.
- Food: Krabi Travel The Sea leaves meals out, Wangsai puts a light breakfast at the pier and a Thai picnic lunch in, and Krabi Sunset Cruises carries a buffet and a bar.
- The pier: Wangsai leaves from its own jetty in Ao Nang, Boat and Beyond from Ao Nang pier, and the junk collects guests by longtail off Ao Nang or Railay beach.
- Departure time: the charters start at 08:00, while the junk lets you choose the hour.
- Whether the park fee is inside — Krabi Sunset Cruises says it is, and the other charters above say it is not; the rangers take the fee in cash at the entrance, so keep cash on you.
Important
a price per boat is not a price per person, and the park fee is usually outside it. For the four islands and Phi Phi, Wangsai and Krabi Travel The Sea print ฿400 (about $11) per adult and ฿200 per child, Boat and Beyond prints ฿200 and ฿100, and the department's announcement for that island zone sets ฿400 and ฿200 — worth settling with your operator before you cast off.
