Four days is the length at which Koh Samui stops being a beach and starts being a base. It is also the length at which the planning goes wrong, because the island's starting points are scattered across three coasts and two of the best days run on fixed weekdays. This is all twelve sea days laid out as a workable sequence: what fits with what, what has to move if the weather does, and what the four days cost.

  • Why the coast you start from decides the order of the days
  • Day 1 — the north coast, close to the airport
  • Day 2 — Ang Thong, by speedboat or by kayak
  • Day 3 — Koh Tao, or Sail Rock if you are certified
  • Day 4 — the one you choose: sunset, a whole boat, the lake or the wind
  • What the four days add up to

Why does the coast you start from decide the order?

Samui's sea days do not all leave from the same place. Most start on the north coast — Bangrak pier is about 10 minutes from Chaweng, 11 from Bophut and the airport, 33 from Lamai — but the Ang Thong kayak day leaves from Nathon in the west, the half-day Thai yacht from an inland river pier in the southwest, the fishing lake sits at Taling Ngam in the southwest and the kite school is at Hua Thanon in the southeast.

Important

one day in this plan is not free to move. The Sail Rock dive trip runs on Tuesdays, Wednesdays, Fridays and Sundays only. If you are certified and Sail Rock is why you came, build the other three days around those weekdays rather than the reverse.

Day 1 — the north coast, close to where you landed

Keep the first day short and near the hotel. The half-day charter on a classic Thai yacht from Ko Samui Boat Charter is ฿25,900 (≈ $717) for the boat with six people covered, each extra adult ฿1,200 (≈ $33) and each child ฿800 (≈ $22), up to 35 aboard. Two departures: 09:30 back around 14:15, or 14:15 back at 19:00 with the sunset on the way home.

The day runs southwest to the Five Islands, then Koh Taen and Koh Mat Sum: snorkelling on the reef, a kayak into the mangrove forest, the pigs on Koh Mat Sum, and fishing from the deck. Transfers from anywhere on Samui, food, fruit, soft drinks, towels, insurance, an English-speaking guide and the Pig Island entry fee are inside the rate.

Two of you, and the charter maths stops working? Then the first day is the four-hour jet-ski tour instead: ฿6,500 (≈ $180) per machine for up to two riders, a guided lap of the island with a snorkel stop over shallow reef, starting from Adrenaline Vibes on the north coast. A child rides as a passenger from age five with an adult on the same machine.

Day 2 — Ang Thong, by speedboat or by kayak

Forty-two islands about ninety minutes west of Samui, and two honest ways in. By speedboat is ฿2,300 (≈ $64) per person plus a ฿300 (≈ $8) park fee: pickup 08:30, out at 09:45, back 16:30, with snorkelling at Koh Wao, the climb on Koh Mae Ko to the Emerald Lake viewpoint, kayaking under the cliffs, Koh Hin Lak and Song Pi Nong beach.

The Bluestars kayak day costs ฿2,800 (≈ $78) per person with the park fee already included, ฿2,700 (≈ $75) from three people and ฿2,600 (≈ $72) from five. Eleven hours: the 23-metre boat leaves Nathon at 08:00, and the day is built around two paddling sessions instead of one, the first at Koh Tai Plao in the far north of the park where the operator says there are normally no other boats.

Tip

pick by the length of the day, not the price. The speedboat gets you home by 16:30 and leaves the evening intact; the kayak day returns to Samui at 17:00 and to your hotel by 18:00, and it earns that hour by paddling twice.

Day 3 — Koh Tao, or Sail Rock if you are certified

The longest day of the four and the one worth the alarm. Koh Tao and Koh Nang Yuan by speedboat is ฿2,300 (≈ $64) per person plus a ฿250 (≈ $7) adult and ฿120 (≈ $3) child island fee, 8.5 hours from the 08:00 pickup to the 16:30 return, with the sandbar viewpoint and three snorkel stops.

Two other doors open on the same day. Try scuba off Koh Tao is ฿5,900 (≈ $163) for two dives to 12 metres with no certificate, from age ten, two students to an instructor. And the snorkeller's seat on the Member Diving boat is ฿2,900 (≈ $80) with lunch — but the destination that day may be the Marine Park or Sail Rock instead of Koh Tao, so confirm it before you pay.

Certified divers swap this day out entirely for Sail Rock: ฿4,650 (≈ $129) per person, two dives on a pinnacle that rises from 40 metres to about 4 below the surface, roughly 50 minutes by speedboat, maximum depth 30 metres, minimum age ten. Pickup 07:45–08:30, back at the hotel by 15:30, Tuesdays, Wednesdays, Fridays and Sundays.

Day 4 — the one you choose

Four different endings, and they are not variations on each other. The shortest is the sunset sail on Independence, a 52-foot Hans Christian yacht taken whole: ฿22,000 (≈ $609) for the boat with two guests covered, ฿2,500 (≈ $69) for each one after that, up to six. Pickup 16:00–16:30, cast off at 17:00, sunset over Ang Thong around 18:30, ashore by 19:30.

If the group is large, the ending is a whole day rather than an evening. The Boutique Yachting full-day private charter is ฿79,000 (≈ $2,188) for the boat, eight hours from Petcherat pier at Bangrak, the rate covering up to twenty people. The two standard routes are the Samui coastline and a crossing to Koh Phangan; Ang Thong is offered as a longer option at a higher rate.

The two land-side endings

The two land-side endings are further from the beach in every sense. TopCats at Taling Ngam is a freshwater trophy lake: ฿7,000 (≈ $194) per fishing person for twelve hours, 08:00 to 20:00, with shorter tickets at ฿4,500 (≈ $125) for the predator session, ฿3,800 (≈ $105) for the early one and ฿3,300 (≈ $91) for four hours.

And the wind. The Mahalo Discovery Session is ฿7,000 (≈ $194) for three hours at the school's spot in Hua Thanon on the southeast shore: beach theory and safety systems, kite control, then practice in the water. Each course includes a private instructor, all the gear and insurance; the six-hour beginner course afterwards is ฿13,000 (≈ $360) split over two or three days.

Two people running the per-person route — jet ski, Ang Thong by speedboat, Koh Tao by speedboat, kite for one — pay ฿6,500 plus ฿4,600 plus ฿4,600 plus ฿7,000, and ฿1,100 in park and island fees: ฿23,800 (≈ $659) for four days on the water. The three whole-boat days instead — half-day yacht, sunset sail, full-day charter — come to ฿126,900 (≈ $3,515) before anyone counts heads. The unit of price changes, not the island.

Dates and availability for every trip above are on the Koh Samui page. The Koh Tao day is broken down on its own in Koh Tao in one day from Koh Samui, and if the island is still competing with another one, Koh Samui or Phuket puts the two islands side by side.
