Where you are allowed to kite#
This is the part that is easy to miss. Kiting is banned at Los Corales and across part of Bávaro, and the school operates a marked-off zone at Pearl Beach Club. Booking with a centre here is therefore not interchangeable with finding somebody on the beach with a kite — the zone is the thing you are buying access to as much as the lesson.
- IKO
- the International Kiteboarding Organization, whose levels run from Kiteboarder 1A upwards.
- Wind window
- the arc of sky in which the kite can fly relative to the wind direction.
- Wingfoil
- a handheld inflatable wing on a foil board; the school rents it alongside kites.
- Body dragging
- being pulled through the water by the kite without a board, the step before riding.
What happens when there is no wind#
The school moves the lesson to another day, and if it cannot be moved it returns the deposit in full. On a coast where the wind is seasonal that policy is worth as much as the teaching, because it removes the risk of paying for a flat week.
How far three hours gets you#
It depends on where you start. The school teaches on the IKO ladder from Kiteboarder Level 1A to advanced, and a first session usually covers kite control on land and body dragging before the board. Riders with IKO Level 4 or equivalent can rent a kite for $120 per session of up to three hours, or a wingfoil set for $150; lessons by the hour are US$110 per person.
- Whether the wind is forecast: the lesson moves if it is not there, so a flexible day helps.
- Which level you are starting from: that sets what the three hours can cover.
- Whether children can join: the minimum age is 8.
Important
Do not plan to kite from your hotel beach. Los Corales and part of Bávaro are closed to kiting, and the legal zone here is the one the school marks off at Pearl Beach Club.
