The wind is taught north and south. In the south, Sotavento and Matas Blancas put you in shallow, flat water at Costa Calma. In the north, Flag Beach works the dune coast beside Corralejo and the El Cotillo lagoon. What separates the schools is less the spot than the block they sell — an hour, a day, or a course counted in hours.
Is the price for an hour, a day or a course?#
Flag Beach sells days: one day of kite is €175 and five are €570, windsurf runs €90 to €360, wing-foil €120 to €520 at ninety minutes a day. René Egli sells blocks of hours — kite at €205 for three, €395 for six, €585 for nine and €750 for twelve — and takes 5 % off if the invoice is transferred a week before you arrive. Matas Bay sells single lessons.
South or north — where do they teach?#
The south is flat water. René Egli sits on Playa Sotavento and holds an exclusive licence for the shallow tidal lagoon, with a free shuttle to its deepest parts and jet-ski support when lessons move into the sea. Matas Bay is fifteen metres from the water at Matas Blancas, in a bay it says does not depend on the tide and stays at least 1.5 m deep.
The north is Flag Beach, on the dune coast beside Corralejo. The kite course starts on the beach and moves onto the open water from the school's own boats, so there is no walking upwind; windsurf and wing-foil are taught both at Flag Beach and in the shallow El Cotillo lagoon on the north-west coast. Day one of the windsurf course begins with a pick-up anywhere in Corralejo.
How many students share an instructor?#
Flag Beach teaches four to an instructor on the beach and two in the water on kite, and up to eight on windsurf. René Egli keeps two students per instructor on kite whatever the level and at most six on windsurf. Matas Bay's semi-private kite lesson is two students on one kite, its groups of three to five give each rider an instructor, and its wing-foil lessons are one to one.
What is worth checking before you book?#
- The unit. Matas Bay marks “per person” on kite and windsurf but not on its wing-foil page; René Egli's windsurf table says only “prices on site” where its kite and wing tables say per person; Flag Beach names no unit at all. Ask how a second participant is charged.
- Licences are extra at Flag Beach: €20 for the international VDWS kite or wing-foil licence with book, €40 for the windsurf one.
- Age and weight. René Egli takes kite and wing-foil students from 15 years and 50 kg but teaches windsurf from 8, with a separate children's course of eight hours at €220.
- No wind. Matas Bay reschedules the lesson and hands out stand-up paddleboards free that day; René Egli states that all courses depend on the weather and on individual progress.
- Rental after the course is a separate line: a complete kite setup at Flag Beach is €70 for half a day, €80 for a day and €140 for two, while Matas Bay's windsurf courses include two hours of free rental.
Important
These figures are packages of hours or days, not hourly rates, and not every school says whom the figure covers. Flag Beach prints course prices without a per-person mark while teaching four to an instructor — settle how a second student is billed before you pay.
