Krabi and Phuket sell the same sea from two different shores, and the choice between them is usually made on a feeling — which is the one thing nobody can check for you. This page compares what can be checked: straight-line distances measured from coordinates, four operator prices for the same Phi Phi day read on 5 September 2026, and the province income figures published by Thailand's Department of Tourism. Where an honest comparison is impossible, the text says so instead of guessing.
- Which shore is closer to Phi Phi, and by how much
- What lies within a longtail ride of the beach
- The same Phi Phi day, priced by four operators
- What the other shore is worth crossing for
- How far apart the two are in scale
- What the map does to your travel days
Which shore is closer to Phi Phi?
Krabi, and the margin is real rather than rhetorical. Measured from coordinates in a straight line on 5 September 2026: Ao Nang to Tonsai on Phi Phi Don is 33.3 km; Rassada pier on Phuket is 41.2 km from the same point and Chalong is 48.3 km. To Maya Bay on Phi Phi Leh the gap narrows — 39.9 km from Ao Nang against 42.9 km from Rassada — because Maya Bay faces west, away from Krabi.
Two caveats belong with those numbers. They are straight lines, not sailing routes, and the time on the water depends on the hull and the swell rather than on the kilometre. And published summaries elsewhere quote roughly 46 km against 74 km, measured from other reference points — the direction of the answer is the same, the numbers are not, which is why the method here is stated rather than assumed.

What lies within a longtail ride of the beach?
This is where the two shores stop being interchangeable. Off Ao Nang, Railay is 3.0 km, Koh Poda 4.9 km and Chicken Island 5.8 km in a straight line, and an Ao Nang operator describes the classic four-islands run as about half an hour of longtail time. That turns the island day into a short one: the four islands by longtail run 09:30 to 15:30 at ฿990 (about $27) per adult, with the national park fee paid separately — the park rate is ฿400 per adult and ฿200 per child, the operator states ฿200 / ฿100, confirm at booking.
Further out from the same beach: Koh Hong is 23.4 km, and 15.1 km from Klong Muang, which is the shorter approach to the same lagoon; Bamboo Island is 23.5 km. From Phuket the island days in the catalogue start further from shore and are sold as full days accordingly — Coral Island and Racha Yai from Ao Chalong at ฿2,500 (about $69) per adult, and Phang Nga Bay with James Bond Island from Boat Lagoon at ฿4,500 per person with six guests needed for the boat to sail. The Similan Islands are reached from that shore too.
What does the same Phi Phi day cost from each shore?
Four offers, all sold per adult, all a full day to the same islands, all read on the operators' own pages on 5 September 2026.
| Trip | Operator | Per adult | On the water | National park fee |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Phi Phi, Pileh Lagoon and Bamboo by speedboat, from Krabi | Wangsai Speedboat | ฿1,500 (about $42) | 07:30 to 16:00 | ฿400 (about $11), paid at check-in |
| Early Bird: Phi Phi and the four islands, from Krabi | Koh Tour | ฿2,395 (about $66) | 06:30 to 16:30 | ฿400 (about $11), paid on the day |
| Phi Phi, Maya Bay and Bamboo by speedboat, from Phuket | Andaman Leisure Phuket | ฿3,900 (about $110) | eight hours | ฿400 (about $11), paid separately |
| Phi Phi Sunrise, eighteen guests, from Phuket | Simba Sea Trips | ฿5,310 (about $145) | eight hours from 06:00 | already in the price |
Read the table as four prices, not as a price level for either province. Two of the four lines differ in what they buy as much as in what they cost: the Koh Tour day adds the four islands on the way home and starts at 06:30, and the Simba day caps the boat at eighteen guests and carries the fees inside the figure. The fee column is worth as much attention as the price column — it moves the comparison by ฿400 (about $11) a head before anything else is decided.
Important
on the Krabi side operators describe the national park fee as something they are not allowed to fold into the price of a boat trip — it is collected in cash and handed to the rangers on arrival, and there are no cash machines on the islands. Some offers do state the fee as included; that is worth confirming in writing before you pay, because the two statements cannot both be routine.

What do you cross the bay for?
Jet skis, parasailing and wakesurfing are Phuket products, and Phuket is 43–50 km away in a straight line across the bay: two hours on a jet ski at ฿4,800 (about $135) per machine for one or two riders, the nine-islands run at ฿7,500 per machine for four hours, and wakesurfing at ฿3,500 an hour for up to six guests. Nothing of that kind is in our verified Krabi selection, where the day is built around boats, kayaks and diving.
The traffic runs the other way as well, and not only in boats. Railay is a mainland peninsula walled off by limestone with no road to it: you arrive by water or you do not arrive. Phuket has no equivalent — its beaches are joined by roads. Krabi's inland water is its own product too: the sea caves at Bor Thor, an hour north of Ao Nang, are a seven-hour paddle at ฿1,795 (about $50) per adult with lunch and entrance fees included, and the mangroves of Ao Thalane are five hours at ฿895.
How far apart are the two in scale?
Far. Tourism income by province for 2024, from the Department of Tourism: Phuket first in the country with ฿497,523.93 (about $13 780) million, Krabi fifth with ฿91,042.62 million — a factor of about 5.5. Both provinces are in the national top five, which is the part most comparisons drop.
That figure is income, not visitors, and the two are not interchangeable: a province with more expensive hotels earns more from the same arrival. The department reports income here, so read the figures as money rather than as a headcount.

What does the map do to your travel days?
Krabi has its own airport: 12.7 km by road to Krabi Town and 28.7 km to Ao Nang beach, with Klong Muang further out at 40.1 km. Inside the node the drives are short — 2.8 km from Ao Nang to Nopparat Thara pier, 18.0 km to the Klong Jilad ferry terminal, 7.0 km to Ao Nam Mao, which is the way onto Railay when the sea off Ao Nang is rough.
The two shores are also connected directly, Klong Jilad to Rassada. Timetables and fares are left out on purpose: the aggregators that publish them contradict each other, so check the departure time and the fare at the pier ticket office or with the carrier on the day.
